Edinboro Advances in PSAC Tournament with 7-2 Win over Mansfield

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team remained alive in the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday night with a 7-2 win over Mansfield in an elimination game. The Fighting Scots remained alive in the double elimination tournament and will face Shippensburg on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. at Veterans Park.

Thursday's games were originally scheduled to begin at 12 noon, but the tournament schedule was revised following Wednesday's games due to impending poor weather.

Edinboro came up with a strong showing at the plate and in the circle while improving to 22-18. Mansfield saw its season come to an end at 17-15-1.

For the second game in a row, Edinboro found itself trailing in the first inning. Mansfield's first three batters in the top of the first inning reached on a double, error, and single, but Carley Nasca settled down and limited the damage to just two runs, one earned.

The Fighting Scots responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Dana Heh reached second base on an error and moved up on a passed ball. Following an out, Olivia Jankowski was hit by a pitch and took second base. Shannon Gilbert got the Fighting Scots on the board with a single to left. Roni Lipinski's RBI single to right knotted the score at 2-2, and Victoria Allocco's infield single brought home Gilbert for a 3-2 lead.

Edinboro would expand the lead with single runs the next three innings. Heh reached on a infield single with one out in the second, stole second and advanced to third on an error. She would score on Jankowski's sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.

The lead grew to 5-2 after three innings as Brittany Allen hit her fifth home run to left center. Heh jump started the offense again in the fourth, as she reached on an infield single with one out and stole second. Lauren Gierlak reached on an error with Heh moving up to third. Gilbert plated Heh with an RBI single and a 6-2 lead.

Edinboro tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-2 lead. Heh registered her third hit of the game and eventually scored her fourth run. She stole second and third, giving her four in the game and 26 in a season, a new school record. Heh also now has 59 hits on the season, one shy of the school record. She would score on Jankowski's second sacrifice fly of the game, giving the senior outfielder 44 RBIs.

While Heh was 3-for-4 with four runs and four stolen bases, Gilbert was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Jankowski also drove in two runs.

While the offense came alive with nine hits, Carley Nasca and Amanda Metz scattered eight hits and held Mansfield scoreless after the first inning.
