MATCH STORYLINES
  • After going 3-1 in the season-opening Rebich Investments Invitational, the Edinboro volleyball team returns to action with a long trip to Texas to play in the Emerald Beach Hotel-Javelina Volleyball Invitational. The Fighting Scots finished with a 14-14 record a year ago and are off to a good start to better last year's finish.  Head coach Missy Soboleski's team while play four matches in the Longhorn State, beginning with two on Friday vs. St. Edward's and Texas A&M-Kingsville. On Saturday, the Fighting Scots square off against St. Mary's before wrapping up against Southwest Baptist.
  • Soboleski is in her 15th year as Edinboro's head coach and holds the career record for victories with 320.  All told, she has compiled a 453-353 record while serving as a head coach for 24 years. She previously served as head coach at Mercyhurst and Gannon before taking over at Edinboro in 2005. She has led Edinboro to eight NCAA Division II playoff berths. Soboleski ranks 22nd in Division II among active coaches in victories, and is third among PSAC coaches.
  • The Fighting Scots were picked to finish third in the PSAC's Northwest Division. Gannon was voted the preseason favorite in the division in the PSAC Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Northwest Division features five teams this year with the addition of Clarion, who moved from the Southwest Division with Shepherd joining the PSAC.
  • Soboleski welcomed back four starters, led by junior Cierah Jackson. The 5'8" outside hitter has earned second team All-PSAC honors while leading the Fighting Scots in kills each of her first two seasons. She entered her third year with 743 career kills and added to that total with a team-high 53 over the first three matches. Jackson was named the PSAC Northwest Division Athlete of the Week for her efforts in the Rebich Investments Invitational. 
  • Alicia Eldredge enjoyed an outstanding season as a freshman starting at setter. She finished with a team-leading 916 assists, which ranks 13th in a season Edinboro. She ranked tenth in the PSAC in assists per set (8.88) and service aces per set (0.38). She had 40-or-more assists in eight matches. Eldredge had 125 assists last weekend.
  • Freshmen look to play a major role in Edinboro's success in 2019. Bella Burrelli, a 6'0" outside hitter/opposite, totaled 44 kills and a team-high 32 digs in her collegiate debut. Erica Sharp, a 6'2", middle hitter/outside hitter, added 29 kills and a team-high 11 blosck. Bethany miller, a 5'6" outside hitter, is another freshman seeing regular action.
  • The Javelina Volleyball invitational is actually a three-day tournament beginning on Thursday, September 12. Here's a look at Edinboro's four opponents:
  • ST. EDWARD'S – currently 2-2 after finishing with an 18-12 record a year ago. The Hilltoppers are members of the Heartland Conference, reaching the conference finals last year.
  • TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE – the host Javelinas entered Thursday's action with a 4-0 record. They reached the semifinals of the Lone Star Conference Tournament snd finished 2018 with a 19-4 record.
  • ST. MARY'S – after going 14-15 a year ago, the Rattlers are off to a 2-1 start in 2019. They also compete in the Heartland Conference.
  • SOUTHWEST BAPTIST – the Bearcats are looking to improve on a 4-27 finish in 2018. They come in at 1-3 and are members of the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

  • Edinboro heads back to Pennsylvania for three matches in the Edinboro/Gannon Tournament on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21. The Fighting Scots host Malone and St. Rose on Friday at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively. On Saturday, they host Walsh at 4 p.m. All three matches are at McComb Fieldhouse.
