Defense Turns in Impressive Effort but Fighting Scots Fall to Cal U

THE GAME FACTS
  • Score:  Cal U 24, Edinboro 7
  • Records:  Edinboro (0-4, 0-1 PSAC West), Cal U (3-1, 1-0 PSAC East)
  • Location:  Edinboro, Pa. – Sox Harrison Stadium
  • The Short Story:  Edinboro fell to 0-4 and lost for the 15th straight time against Cal, but it was not due to a lack of effort by the defense. In fact, the Edinboro D went toe-to-toe with a high-powered Vulcans offense that came in averaging over 48 ppg. Unfortunately, the Edinboro offense was never able to get going save for three long pass plays from Andrew Tomko to Andre Dowdell Jr., and Cal benefited  from a short field on three occasions. They would score 10 points on a pair drives of 21 yards or less. Edinboro scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass from backup QB Jordan Castelli to Ta'Nauz Gregory early in the third quarter following a Brandon Anderson interception. That cut the deficit to 10-7, but Cal would tack on a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters.
GAMEDAY MEDIA CENTER HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Cal would take advantage of a shanked Edinboro to put the first points of the afternoon on the board. The Vulcans took over at the Edinboro 28 following a shanked punt that traveled just 19 yards. They ran a reverse on first down, with JaQuae Jackson going 15 yards to the EU 13. The Boro defense would dig in and hold Cal to a 24-yard field goal by Keaton Hier for a 3-0 lead with 4:22 left in the first quarter.
  • The Vulcans would put together a 13-play drive that started late in the first quarter and ended in the second. Starting at their own 20, Cal would drive inside the Edinboro 5, but the Fighting Scots were up to the challenge. On 1st-and-goal from the three, Nelson Brown was thrown for a yard loss. Jamorya Cousin carried to the one on second down, but Brandon Anderson and Ryan Bischof combined to throw Cousin for a yard loss. Hier came in to attempt an 18-yard field goal, but his attempt hit the left upright and the score remained 3-0
  • The Edinboro offense came alive following the missed field goal thanks to a pair of Andrew Tomko to Andre Dowdell Jr. completions. The first covered 42 yards to the Cal 37. Three plays later the duo combined for a 37-yard completion. It appeared Dowdell had reached the end zone, but he was ruled down at the one. Tomko was thrown for a yard loss on first down, and a false start moved the fall back to the seven. On the ensuing play, Tomko rolled to his right and attempted to throw back over the middle. His pass was intercepted at the goal line by Noah Dillow to end the threat.
  • The Vulcans would follow with another time-consuming drive, going 14 plays and eating up over five minutes. The Boro defense would halt the drive at the EU 41 with just over two minutes to play, forcing a punt.
  • Edinboro took over at its own 20 with 2:17 remaining in the half, but three plays netted just two yards and the Fighting Scots were forced to punt. Cal would take over at its own 34 with 1:17 to play. Noah Mitchell completed a pass for 16 yards to Tyson Hill, and 15 yards was tacked on for roughing the passer. The duo then combined for a 30-yard completion that featured a leaping catch, followed by several missed tackles before Hill; was brought down at the EU 5. Three plays later, Mitchell threw his tenth touchdown of the season, a two-yard pass to Cam Tarrant. The score came with just 28 seconds left and gave Cal a 10-0 lead at the half.
  • Brandon Anderson gave Edinboro excellent field position early in the second half, as the redshirt senior strong safety intercepted a MItchell pass and returned it 14 yards to the Cal 20.
  • On the first play from scrimmage, backup quarterback Jordan Castelli, in for an injured Tomko, evaded the pocket to his right and threw 20 yards to Ta'Nauz Gregory for a touchdown. Vicente Arriagada's extra point pulled the Fighting Scots to within 10-7 with 14;10 left in the third quarter.
  • Following an exchange of punts, Cal would put together a six-play, 57-yard scoring drive to take a 17-7 lead. The first two plays were passes of 19 yards to Tarrant and 20 yards to Hill. A pair of Cousin runs accounted for 16 yards, and Brown went off left tackle for a two-yard scoring run at 7:23 left in the third quarter.
  • Edinboro's next four possessions resulted in just one first down, and another short punt, followed by an unsportsmanlike penalty, resulted in outstanding field position for Cal. The 25-yard punt and 15-yard mark off gave the Vulcans the ball at the EU 21. Four plays later, Cal was in the end zone thanks to a 10-yard TD pass from Mitchell to Hill. Hill did most of the work, taking a jet pass and sprinting to his left. He appeared hemmed in, but evaded several tacklers to give Cal a 24-7 lead with 8:14 to play.
  • Edinboro would have one more possession without a first down, and Cal took over and ran out the clock.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • The final numbers don't necessarily tell what an outstanding job a banged-up Edinboro defense did against a Cal offense that came in ranked seventh in Division II in scoring offense (48.3 ppg.) while averaging 422.7 ypg. Cal would end the day with 425 yards. The Vulcans were held to 118 yards rushing after coming in averaging over 150 yards. The Edinboro defense didn't wilt despite Cal holding a time of possession advantage of 40:18 to 19:42.
  • The Edinboro offense struggled against a Cal defense that came in ranked second in Division II in rushing defense (24.3 ypg.), second in turnover margin (3.00), and third in sacks per game (4.33). The Fighting Scots finished with 154 yards in total offense, and had minus 4 yards rushing. The latter figure is tied for the sixth-lowest figure in school history. Edinboro quarterbacks were sacked just twice and the Scots turned the ball over just once. Edinboro was 1-for-12 on third down conversions and finished with six first downs compared to 27 for the Vulcans.
  • Freshman Dorian Woody finished with 24 yards rushing on 13 carries. He added a pair of receptions for 10 yards.
  • After missing last week's East Stroudsburg game with an injury, Andrew Tomko returned against Cal. The redshirt junior completed 4-of-11 passes for 125 yards with one interception. He was knockd out of the game late in the first half and replaced by Jordan Castelli. The redshirt sophomore, who transferred to Edinboro from Cal in January, played the entire second half and 2as 4-of-15 for 33 yards with a touchdown.
  • Andre Dowdell Jr. posted the top game of his career. The senior wide receiver set career-highs with 5 receptions for 128 yards, hauling in passes of 41, 42, and 37 yards.
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory was double-covered much of the day and was limited to just one reception, but that was a 20-yard TD reception. It was the 29th receiving touchdown of his career.
  • Four defenders finished with 10-or-more tackles, with Maurice Sims, Gilberto Ortiz II, and Brandon Anderson leading the way with 12 tackles apiece. Sims, a senior defensive back, had seven solo stops. Anderson has now had double figure tackles in three of four games. He added an interception, a TFL, and a pass broken up,
  • Aaron Rogers returned after missing two games with an injury suffered at Grand Valley State. It was a special day for Rogers, who a year ago went down with a season-ending injury against Cal. He totaled 10 tackles and broke up 3 passes while spending much of the day chasing cal's leading receiver, Jordan Dandridge. He limited Dandrige to four catches.
  • Saige Ley made his first career start at linebacker. The true freshman totaled 8 tackles.
  • Cal's Noah Mitchell completed 25-of-42 passes for 290 yards with 2 TDs and 1 INT. Tyson Hill would total 136 yards on 8 catches, many of those yards coming after the catch. Dandridge gad 4 catches for 58 yards and JaQuae Jackson 4 for 35 and a touchdown.
  • Edinboro limited the Cal ground game to just 118 yards and 3.0 yards per carry. Nelson Brown came in as one of the leading rushers in the PSAC, but was limited to 58 yards on 22 carries. Jamorya Cousin added 38 yards on 12 totes.
THE RECORD BOOK
  • Ta'Nauz Gregory was limited somewhat in his pursuit of Edinboro's receiving records. With just one catch, he now has 186 career receptions, which ranks third, and is also third in career receiving yards with 2,595. He is also second in receiving TDs (29) after catching his first six-pointer of the season.
  • Corey Badaracco punted 11 times, which is one shy of the school record of 12. That has occurred on five occasions. The redshirt sophomore averaged 35.2 yards with a pair inside the 20.
  • Edinboro recognized its Class of 2019 of the Athletic Hall of Fame at halftime. Nine individuals were inducted last night, and five were in attendance today. They included former football standouts Chris Amico and Chris Avery, plus Jenna Newman (volleyball) and Dana Webb (softball), along with Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Ed Mailliard. The five also served as honorary captains.
UP NEXT
  • Edinboro makes the short journey to Erie to play the first of back-to-back rivalry games. The Fighting Scots will play at Gannon on Saturday, October 5, with kickoff set for 12 noon.
  • The Fighting Scots posted a 31-24 win over Gannon on homecoming last year.
  • Edinboro owns a 9-5 lead in the all-time series, but the Scots have not won at Gannon since 2011. The Golden Knights have won the last three games in Erie.
