Calleja, Bender Post Wins as Boro Falls to Grove City in Opener

EDINBORO, Pa. – The all-freshman Edinboro women's tennis team opened the 2019-20 season with a 5-2 loss to Grove City on Tuesday night. The youthful Fighting Scots faced a Grove City team which won the Presidents' Athletic Conference title last year and is now 2-0.

The Fighting Scots found themselves at a disadvantage with just five players available due to an injury. They were forced to forfeit number six singles and number three doubles, but were highly competitive in the other matches.

After dropping both doubles matches to fall behind 1-0, Edinboro would pick up wins at number two and number four singles. Torye Calleja picked up her first career win at number two singles with a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win. Fellow freshman Morgan Bender won a marathon match at number four singles with a 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 triumph.

Lauren Chiaccia also went three sets at number five singles, but would suffer a 5-7, 6-1, 11-9 setback.

The Fighting Scots are right back in action on Wednesday, September 4, hosting Westminster. The match gets underway at 5 p.m.
