Boro Blitzes The Rock Early for 88-59 Victory

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team opened back-to-back road games with an impressive showing at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. Leading from start to finish, the Fighting Scots recorded an 88-59 win to improve to 10-7 overall and 8-5 in the PSAC West. Slippery Rock fell to 5-14 and 3-10 in league play.

Edinboro has now won three games in a row and six of its last seven contests. They also continued their mastery over Slippery Rock, winning for the 21st time in the last 23 meetings.

Michaela Barnes led a trio of players in double figures with 25 points, her tenth game with 20-or-more points this season. The senior guard made 10-of-14 field goal, including a 3-pointer, and was 4-of-6 at the line. She boosted her career total to 1,681 points, which is fourth all-time at Edinboro.

Bridgette Shaffer added 19 points, making 5-of-12 3-pointers, along with nine rebounds. She entered as the PSAC leader in 3-pointers made per game, and has now made at least one 3-pointer in all 17 games and 19 straight dating back to last year.

Cheniya Sharpe recorded her third straight double-double and fifth in the last six games with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Rana Elhusseini flirted with a triple-double at the half and would end with nine points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Monica Brown and Madison Amalia contributed to Edinboro's 11 3-pointers on the day, making two each.

Edinboro sprinted to a 25-6 lead after one quarter. They enjoyed a run of 19 straight points bridging the first and second quarters. Leading 9-6 midway through the quarter, Edinboro scored the final 16 points of the period, and Shaffer opened the second quarter with a three for a 28-6 lead.

SRU finally ended the run when Kasch Harris made one of two free throws. The Rock was held without a point for over five minutes while missing eight shots and turning the ball over three times in that stretch.

Slippery Rock would close the deficit to 10 points at 40-30 with 1:28 remaining in the half, but Edinboro scored seven of the final eight points for a 47-31 lead at intermission. Elhusseini scored on a layup, Shaffer hit a 3-pointer, and with 12 seconds left, Sharpe scored on a layup.

The Rock scored the opening basket of the second half to pull to within 14 at 47-33, but Edinboro answered with a 13-4 run to make it 60-37. Barnes scored three baskets and Shaffer had five points in the run.

Edinboro would hold a 65-43 lead after three quarters. The lead would grow to as much as 31 points at 86-55 late in the contest.

The Fighting Scots ended the game shooting 47.1 percent from the floor (32-of-68), including 11-of-28 3-pointers, and was 13-of-20 at the line. SRU finished at 40.7 percent (24-of-59), going 4-of-16 on 3-pointers, and was 7-of-11 at the line.

As has been the case in recent games, Edinboro dominated the glass, 46-33. That included 19 offensive boards, leading to a 23-5 advantage in second chance points. While Edinboro committed just one less turnover than SRU (17 to 18), the Scots held a 22-12 edge in points off turnovers.

Daeja Quick led Slippery Rock with 13 points. Brooke Hinderliter, who came into the game as the PSAC's fifth-leading scorer at over 19 ppg., was held to five points, making 2-of-8 shots.

The Fighting Scots will play their second of back-to-back road games on Wednesday, January 29 at Mercyhurst.
