Vath, Oliver Post Wins vs. Tenth-Ranked Pittsburgh

Tyler Vath won a 10-5 decision at 149 lbs.
PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team took to the mat for the second time in three days, this time facing a Pittsburgh team that came in ranked tenth on the latest NWCA Division I Top 25. The Panthers would hand the Fighting Scots a 28-6 loss, but Edinboro turned in a number of strong showings against a Pitt lineup that featured five nationally-ranked wrestlers. It marked the first meeting between the two former EWL rivals since the 2016-17 season.

Pitt would jump out to a 13-0 lead with three straight wins by bonus points. At 133 lbs., Tye Varndell (13-10), who has faced one outstanding wrestler after another as true freshman, trailed sixth-ranked Micky Phillippi (18-1) 2-0 after one period and 5-0 after two before Phillippi pulled away for the 12-3 major decision.

Tyler Vath would get the Fighting Scots on the board with a 10-5 decision over Luke Kemerer at 149 lbs. The redshirt junior improved to 10-11. Vath led 2-1 after one period, and extended the advantage with an escape and takedown for a 5-1 lead after two periods.

Peter Pappas (14-11) led Taleb Rahmani (11-6) 4-3 after two periods in his 157 lb. match, but Rahmani would rally for a 7-5 decision to give Pitt a 16-3 lead. Derek Ciavarro was up next at 165 lbs. against 11th-ranked Jake Wentzel. Ciavarro trailed 2-0 after one period after 5-1 after two. He would drop to 10-11 with a 6-1 loss.

The highlight match of the day took place at 174 lbs., with Jacob Oliver in search of his ninth straight win against 19th-ranked Gregg Harvey. Oliver grabbed a 2-1 lead after one period, still led 2-1 after two, and left the mat a 3-1 winner to improve to 19-4. Harvey is now 13-5.

Redshirt freshman Cody Mulligan is another young wrestler who has had to grow while facing a strong schedule. On Sunday, he squared off with ninth-ranked Nino Bonaccorsi at 184 lbs. Bonaccorsi led 4-1 after three minutes, but Mulligan had the lone point in the second to close to 4-2. Bonaccorsi, who is now 16-3, would close out an 8-3 decision as Mulligan is now 14-10.

At 197 lbs., Dylan Reynolds (15-9) and Kellan Stout battled through two scoreless periods. Stout would come away with a 2-0 decision.
The heavyweight bout featured eighth-ranked Demetrius Thomas (15-3), a former NAIA national champion, against Jon Spaulding (18-6). Spaulding would lose for just the second time in his last nine bouts. Thomas used a second period escape for a 1-0 lead, and held off Spaulding, 3-0.

Edinboro will host the annual Edinboro Open on Saturday, February 1 at the Mike S. Zafirovski Sports & Recreation Dome.
