Fighting Scots Split Duals with Buffalo, Gannon to Open Up 2020

EDINBORO, Pa. – The Edinboro wrestling team wrestled for the first time in 2020 on Sunday, hosting the University at Buffalo in a Mid-American Conference dual, followed by a dual against Gannon. In between, UB and Gannon squared off.  UB would finish at 2-0 on the day, handing the Fighting Scots a 25-13 defeat, then beating Gannon 31-10. Edinboro would wrap up the day with a 39-0 win over Gannon. Edinboro is now 8-4 overall and 2-2 in the MAC after falling to Buffalo.

Four Fighting Scots picked up two victories. Lucas Rodriguez picked up a decision against Buffalo at 125 lbs., then won by forfeit vs. Gannon. Tyler Vath won by decision and major decision at 149 lbs., while Jacob Oliver won both of his bouts by major decision at 174 lbs. At heavyweight, Jon Spaulding picked up a decision and the lone fall of the day for Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots will return to action on Thursday, January 16 at Bloomsburg. That is part of a two-day trip, with Edinboro moving on to wrestle at Rider the next day. Both matches are MAC duals against former EWL members.  

BUFFALO 25, EDINBORO 13
Edinboro met Buffalo for the first time since the 2013-14 season, only this time it came with both members of the Mid-American Conference. The Fighting Scots would lose to the Bulls for just the second time in 19 meetings as UB had four bonus-point wins, including a pair of falls. Lucas Rodriguez (11-7) gave Edinboro a brief 3-0 lead with a 7-1 decision over Jordan Reyes at 125 lbs.  The Bulls would win four of the next five matches, all with bonus points, as UB jumped ahead 19-6 after Troy Keller won by fall over Derek Ciavarro at 165 lbs. Tyler Vath (8-8) picked up Edinboro's win as the redshirt junior claimed a 5-2 decision over John Arceri at 149 lbs. Jacob Oliver would pull Edinboro to within 19-10 with a 12-0 major decision over Jake Lanning at 174 lbs., improving to 14-4 in the process. Peter Acciardi surprised Cody Mulligan (12-7) with a 5-3 decision at 184 lbs., and the Bulls claimed another close decision at 197 lbs. as Sam Schuyler used a takedown with two seconds remaining for a 6-4 win over Dylan Reynolds (12-7). Jon Spaulding wrapped up the match with a 5-0 decision over Nolan Terrance at heavyweight to improve to 14-5.

EDINBORO 39, GANNON 0
The Fighting Scots and Golden Knights met for just the second time on the mat, and the first since 2000-01. Edinboro would dominate a very game Gannon squad that came in ranked 24th in Division II.  Head coach Matt Hill's squad won three major decisions, a fall, and picked up a forfeit at 125 lbs. to start the match. Freshman Tye Varndell (13-6) came back after a tough loss against UB to claim an 8-0 major decision over Austin Hertel.  Vath improved to 9-8 as he also won by major decision, 13-3 over Dom Means, who is ranked 11th in Division II.  Oliver (15-4) would dominate his 174 lb. match late for an 11-3 major decision over Luigi Yates. Spaulding (15-5) wrapped up the match with a pin at 2:12 over Gehrig Hutchison at heavyweight. Two other Fighting Scots won decision over Gannon wrestlers ranked seventh in Division II in their respective weight classes. Ciavarro (9-8) handed Alex Farenchak a 10-4 defeat at 165 lbs., and Reynolds posted a hard-earned 5-3 decision over Freddie Nixon at 197 lbs.
