January 11, 2020 – Edinboro 73, California(Pa.) 72 at California, Pa.
  • Edinboro upset a nationally-ranked Cal team for the fifth straight time as Michaela Barnes scored 35 points. The Fighting Scots trailed most of the game and entered the quarter trailing 57-49. They proceeded to outscore the Vulcans, 24-15, over the final ten minutes. The Fighting Scots opened the period with a 10-2 run, and Barnes at one point scored 12 straight points. The lead would change hands several times over the next few minutes before Edinboro took the lead for good at 67-65 with 4:13 remaining on a Bridgette Shaffer 3-pointer. When Barnes drained a 16-foot jumper with 1:58 remaining, the Scots led 73-67. The homestanding Vulcans made things interesting after that. Shauna Harrison hit a 3-pointer to make it 73-70 with 1:32 left, and after a turnover, Jasper's drive cut Edinboro's lead to a point at 73-72 with a minute left.  Edinboro would miss a 3-pointer and Cal would have one last possession. They put the ball in Jasper's hands, but she was unable to get a good look. Her off-balance shot from the foul line was off the mark. Brionna Allen grabbed the rebound under the basket with a second left, but her hurried layup was no good. Barnes made 14-of-19 shots, including her lone 3-point attempt, and was 6-of-7 at the line for her 35 points. She added eight rebounds.Shaffer finished with 15 points and had eight rebounds. Cheniya Sharpe recorded her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.  Monica Burns led Cal with 27 points, making 5-of-6 3-pointers. HEAD COACH
Callie Wheeler (Edinboro '06) – 33-17, 2nd Year
  • Callie Wheeler was named Edinboro's fifth head coach on May 23, 2018, replacing long-time head coach Stan Swank. The former Edinboro standout served as Swank's assistant coach for the previous 11 years before assuming the head coaching duties. Edinboro enjoyed great success during Wheeler's 11 seasons at Swank's side, posting a 239-86 record in her 11 seasons on the bench. In her first season as head coach, she led Edinboro to a 20-9 record, the ninth straight 20-win campaign. The Fighting Scots made the PSAC Tournament for the tenth straight season and earned a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament for the second straight year.
  • Wheeler played for the Fighting Scots from 2002-06, and ranks as one of the all-time greatest players in Edinboro history. She became Edinboro's sixth Kodak/WBCA All-American as she earned honorable mention All-American honors. That capped a brilliant senior season in which she was named the PSAC West Athlete of the Year and was a first-team All-PSAC West selection. In addition, she was selected as the Nancy Acker Award winner in 2006. As a senior, the 5'5" guard set a school record with 249 assists. She led the PSAC in both assists and steals, finishing with 95 in the latter category.
  • The Iorfido name (Wheeler's maiden name) is well known in Edinboro Athletics, where her family has had quite an impact. Her father, Rich, was a standout linebacker for the Edinboro football team from 1970-72 and was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in April 2007. Callie joined her father as a member of the Edinboro Hall of Fame in October 2016. Younger sister Mandie was a standout catcher on the softball team, and a two-time All-PSAC West performer.
SCOUTING CAL U
  • After suffering through a rare three-game winning streak, Cal has rebounded to win four straight contests. That includes a 57-52 upset of fourth-ranked Indiana(Pa.) on Wednesday. That gives the Vulcans a 17-6 overall record and 11-6 in the PSAC West. Defense has been the name of the game for Cal during that stretch, but that has been the case all year. The Vulcans have allowed less than 60 points in each of the four wins. For the year, the Vulcans allow 63.5 ppg., good for fifth in the PSAC. They have held 11 opponents under 60 points. Oddly enough, the Vulcans rank last in the conference in field goal percentage defense (44.8 pct.), but they lead the PSAC in turnover margin (+8.4). Cal is in search of its sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance after finishing at 26-6 a year ago. The Vulcans advanced to the Atlantic Regional final for the fourth time in seven years while also posting the fourth 25-win campaign in the last five years. Jess Strom is in her ninth season in charge of the Vulcans and owns a 208-53 record. A balanced squad has three players scoring in double figures. Monica Burns, a 5'6" senior who was a two-time All-MEC performer at Wheeling Jesuit before transferring to Cal, leads the way with 14.2 ppg.  She has made 40-of-114 3-pointers and is 78-of-88 at the line (88.6 pct.). Shauna Harrison, a 5'11" sophomore, contributes 10.8 ppg. and a team-high 5.7 rpg. She has made 43-of-138 3-pointers. Bianca Jasper, a 5'6" junior, adds 10.5 ppg. and 5.3 rpg.
