Coleman, Staunch Power Edinboro to Season-Ending 85-80 Win at Seton Hill

GREENSBURG, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team ended the season as it began -- with a win. The Fighting Scots snapped a long losing streak with an 85-80 win at Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon behind monstrous efforts from seniors Anthony Coleman and Trey Staunch.

Coleman scored a career-high 39 points, the most since Keshawn Liggins scored 39 points against Seton Hill on January 3, 2018. Staunch, meanwhile, muscled his way to 25 points and pulled down a career-high 20 rebounds. Edinboro ended the year at 6-20 overall and 3-19 in the PSAC West, while Seton Hill concludes at 4-22 and 3-19, respectively.

Coleman, a 6'3" guard, had 22 points at the half, and would finish the day making 15-of-32 shots, including 6-of-15 3-pointers, while going 3-of-3 at the line. He added 6 rebounds and had 3 steals. His previous career high was 32 points at Millersville earlier in the year. He finishes his career with 862 career points in just 53 games during a career that was interrupted a couple times for injuries.

Staunch, meanwhile, made 11-of-17 field goals and was just 3-of-4 at the line despite being constantly hammered inside. It was his 18th straight game in double figures, and the double-double was his seventh of the season and fourth in the last six games. The 20 rebounds eclipsed his career high of 17 vs. Pitt-Johnstown in January and are the most since Bryan Theriot hauled down 20 vs. Penn State Beaver during the 2012-13 campaign.

The 6'4", 285 lb. graduate student played football for four years, the final three as an offensive tackle, earning All-PSAC West honors as a senior. He would play basketball for three seasons, and wraps up his career just shy of the 1,000-500 club. In 77 games, he totaled 982 points and 492 rebounds.

In the end, Edinboro would need all of Coleman's and Staunch's production. The lead would go back-and-forth in the first half before Edinboro scored nine straight points to take a 19-17 lead. Seton Hill would retake the lead at 22-21, but Coleman's layup gave Edinboro the lead for good at 26-24 with 7:19 left in the first half.

A 13-1 run late in the half, with Coleman scoring the first seven points, boosted the lead to 46-32. Edinboro would lead 46-33 at the half, as Coleman made 9-of-16 shots, including four 3-pointers, while Staunch had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Fighting Scots scored the first eight points of the second half, five by Coleman and three by Staunch, to take their largest lead at 53-33. Following a timeout, the Griffins came roaring back. A 23-9 run made it 62-56 with 13:34 still remaining.

Edinboro still maintained a 10-point lead at 68-58 with just under ten minutes remaining, but Seton Hill scored the next eight points to close to 68-66. The Fighting Scots would rebuild the advantage to 78-70 with 3:28 to play on a Staunch layup and Coleman three, only to see the Griffins cut the margin again to two at 80-78 with 19 seconds showing.

Alec Ferrari, who had made 2-of-3 free throws on the season, was fouled with 17 seconds to play. The redshirt junior guard calmly sink both for a four-point lead, and after a steal by Ferrari, Daylon Harris's dunk clinched the win, with Ferrari picking up the assist.

Edinboro would shoot 44.9 percent from the floor for the day (31-of-69), making 9-of-23 3-pointers and 14-of-19 free throws. Seton Hill, meanwhile, came in at 45.5 percent from the floor (30-of-66), making 10-of-29 3-pointers and 10-of-14 free throws. With Staunch leading the way, Edinboro held a 42-37 advantage on the glass, and both teams were efficient with the ball. Edinboro had six turnovers and Seton Hill nine.

Edinboro would outscore Seton Hill in the paint, 42-30, and held a 20-10 advantage in second chance points as Staunch had 10 offensive rebounds.

Harris, in his final game, finished with 8 points. Jaryn Simpson had 8 rebounds and 5 assists.

Seton Hill featured four players in double figures, led by Nathan Davis. Playing in his last game on Senior Day, Davis totaled 25 points and 8 rebounds. Drew Green added 16 points, with Chimaobi Ezekwesili adding 12 and Tommy Sekunda 10.
