Gilbert, Cordera go deep but Fighting Scots fall twice

JAN PHYL VILLAGE, Fl. – The Edinboro's women's softball team dropped a pair of contests on Friday at The Spring Games, falling 7-2 to Northern State and 8-0 in five innings to New York Tech.

The Fighting Scots are now 0-10. Originally scheduled to play Jefferson and Florida Atlantic Palm, the Fighting Scots are now expected to face PSAC foe Kutztown in a pair of contests on Saturday. That will bring the 2020 season to a close as the coronavirus has forced the cancellation of the remainder of the season.

NORTHERN STATE 7, EDINBORO 2
The Fighting Scots got home runs from Shannon Gilbert and Kelsey Cordera, but it wasn't enough against Northern State ace Meghan Anderson. Anderson permitted six hits, with a walk and eight strikeouts. Edinboro would score first on a solo home run by Gilbert, her first of the season. Northern State knotted the score with a run in the top of the third, then pushed across six runs in the top of the fourth. The xx took advantage of seven hits and a pair of errors. Cordera, a freshman, hit her first career home run in the bottom of the seventh. Maya Kozub had a double for Edinboro. Another freshman, Baylee Roxby, threw 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing a hit with one strikeout. Northern State improved to 15-4.

NEW YORK TECH 8, EDINBORO 0 (5 innings)
New York Tech scored in just two innings, but the Wolves scored five runs in the first, then added three in the bottom of the fifth.   The freshman-laden Fighting Scots were hurt by seven errors leading to five unearned runs. Edinboro's best opportunity to score came in the fifth inning. They would put runners on second and third as Kelsey Cordera was hit by a pitch and Olivia Weller singled, but could not score a run. The Bears improved to 2-1 as three pitchers combined on a four-hitter. Lauren Gierlak and Shannon Gilbert also had singles.
