Fighting Scots Fall in PSAC Quarterfinals at Gannon, 67-53

ERIE, Pa. – Edinboro's quest for a sixth PSAC championship came to an end on Wednesday night as the Fighting Scots dropped a 67-53 decision at Gannon in the PSAC Quarterfinals. Edinboro, seeded third in the Western Division, sees its another highly-successful season come to an end at 17-11. Second-seed Gannon improved to 23-6 and moves on this weekend's PSAC Final Four at Indiana(Pa.).

The loss signals the end to the brilliant career of Michaela Barnes, along with fellow senior starters Bridgette Shaffer and Cheniya Sharpe. All three contributed greatly to the team's success.

Barnes, who was celebrating her 22nd birthday, would end the night with a game-high 26 points while being constantly harassed by the Gannon defense. She would eclipse two more milestones in the process. Thanks to a free throw early in the second quarter, she became the 14th player in PSAC history with 2,000 points. Not long after that she scored her 2,006th career points, again on a free throw, to become the top scorer in Edinboro history – male or female – passing Jaymon Mason.

She ends her season with a school-record 737 points, the third-highest total all-time in the PSAC. She fell two points shy of second place and just seven points shy of Brooque Williams of California(Pa.), who finished with 744 points.

Shaffer also reached double figures with 13 points, and joined Barnes as a record-breaker. The forward made three 3-pointers to give her 89 3-pointers this season, breaking Krystal Henson's record of 88 set in 2001-02. While playing three seasons, she finishes eighth in career 3-pointers with 151. Shaffer also led Edinboro with 7 rebounds.

Sharpe battled injuries for much of her career but was able to stay healthy this year, and emerged as the leading rebounder in the PSAC. The 5'11" graduate student finished with 285 rebounds this year, good for 14th in a season, and her 575 career rebounds are 17th. She would be limited to 5 rebounds at Gannon as the Lady Knights consistently assigned two players to box her out.

Edinboro would jump out to an 11-7 lead in a low-scoring first quarter. The Fighting Scots would hold Gannon to just 3-of-13 from the floor in the first ten minutes.

Gannon would heat up in the second quarter, making 9-of-15 shots, including 5-of-8 3-pointers. The first half featured four ties and six lead changes, with Edinboro taking its largest lead of the night at six points on a Sharpe jumper early in the second quarter to make it 13-7. The Lady Knights would close on an 8-2 run to take a 31-26 lead at the half.

Gannon would open the third quarter with a 3-pointer by Emily Poling for a 34-26 lead, and the two teams then went over three minutes without scoring. Shaffer finally broke the scoreless stretch with her second three of the night to close the gap to 34-29.

The Lady Knights would slowly build the advantage up to ten points, with Barnes' jumper with 10 seconds left pulling Edinboro to 47-39 after three quarters.

Poling would open the fourth quarter with another 3-pointer after neither team scored for over two minutes. That trey gave the Lady Knights a 50-39 lead, and they would expand the margin to 52-39.

Edinboro would snap a dry spell of almost four minutes on a Shaffer steal and layup. She then came back with her record-breaking third trifecta to cut the defict to 52-44 with 5:50 remaining.

The Fighting Scots would close to eight points on two more occasions, but each time Gannon answered. With 2:49 left to play, a pair of Barnes free throws made it 58-50. They would not score again until ten seconds remained, as Gannon went on a 9-0 run, the first seven points coming at the line.  That left Edinboro trailing 67-50.

Edinboro would end up shooting a season-low 29.3 percent (17-of-58), making 7-of-29 3-pointers and doing 12-of-14 at the line. Barnes accounted for most of that with an 11-of-12 showing at the charity stripe. Gannon shot 44.9 percent (22-of-49), making 8-of-23 3-pointers, and going 15-of-21 at the line.

A tight rebounding battle would go to Gannon, 36-34, while the Lady Knights committed 15 turnovers and Edinboro 13. Gannon would hold a 28-18 advantage in points in the paint.

The Lady Knights would have three double-figure scorers. Tori Obenrader had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, with Sydney Mitchell adding 17 points, 9 boards, and 8 assists, and Poling coming off the bench for 10 points.
