Quider Homers in Both Games as Edinboro Opens Season with Losses to Minnesota State Mankato, Bentley

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Edinboro softball team opened its 2020 campaign on Sunday with a pair of games in The Spring Games. Playing at TheDiamondPlex, the Fighting Scots suffered a 10-2 loss in five innings to a strong Minnesota State-Mankato team, followed by a 19-9 loss to Bentley.

Dan Gierlak began his 31st season as head copach, and has a youthful roster featuring 17 freshmen. 

Edinboro will play twice on Monday, facing Nyack at 1:45 p.m. and Wayne State(Neb.) at 4 p.m. The Fighting Scots are slated to play 12 total games over the next week in Florida.
 
MINNESOTA STATE-MANKATO 10, EDINBORO 2 (5 innings)
Playing approximately 12 hours after arriving in Florida, the Fighting Scots faced a strong squad that came in with a 9-3 record. Mankato jumped out to 3-0 after one inning thanks to a pair of hits, along with two Edinboro errors, in the bottom of the first. Edinboro would cut the lead to 3-1 as freshman Mackenzie Quider hit a home run in her very first collegiate at bat. The Mavericks boosted their lead to 7-1 after three innings as Hannah McCarville blasted a three-run homer. Courtney Potter would add an RBI double. McCarville added a second home run in the fourth inning, a two-run shot, as Mankato went up 10-1. Edinboro would push across a run in the top of the fifth on a Shannon Gilbert single, driving in freshman Samantha Martz, who had singled. Edinboro finished with eight hits, compared to nine by the Mavericks, but the Fighting Scots were guilty of four errors while playing outside for the first time.Quider went 2-for-2 while Gilbert was 2-for-3.
 
BENTLEY 19, EDINBORO 9
The Fighting Scots bats came alive, but a young pitching staff would allow 16 hits and also suffer from eight errors. Edinboro trailed in the slugfest just 7-5 after four innings, but the Falcons exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Scots kept battling back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and a run in the sixth, but Bentley tacked on four runs in the top of the seventh to pull away. Edinboro would pound out nine hits, with Mackenzie Quider adding her second home run of the day, a two-run shot in the third. The freshman would go 2-for-3. Fellow freshman Dylan Claycomb added a two-run homer in the fifth, her first career homer. Jolene Teller, a transfer from Mercyhurst, added two hits in three at bats. Bentley improved to 3-5.
