Edinboro, Pa. - The Edinboro University volleyball team was victorious in three sets (25-8, 25-17, 25-18) over Slippery Rock University, in a PSAC West match up on Friday night at Morrow Field House in Slippery Rock, PA. With the win the Fighting Scots improved to (13-3) overall and (6-1) in the PSAC West. The Rock falls to (4-16) overall and (1-6) in conference play.
On the offensive attack for Edinboro, junior Bella Burrelli led the way with a game-high 10 kills, freshman Abby Monn contributed nine kills of her own
Senior Sally Sterkel and sophomore Natalie Pallone each added seven kills of their own, Sterkel posted an efficient .636 hitting percentage
Edinboro's attack was set up by senior Alicia Eldredge, she was responsible for 35 of the teams total 40 assists
On the defensive side Edinboro found success in slowing down the Rock's attack, the Scots held Slippery Rock to a .010 hitting percentage
Burrelli led the team in the digs department, she recorded 12 on the evening, Monn contributed 11 of her own, and freshman Carly Pry added nine
Edinboro had even spread amongst four different players in the block department, junior Erica Sharp, Eldredge, Pallone, and Sterkel all posted one block each
In the opening set of the match, Edinboro came roaring out of the gates and meant business. The Scots would win the first set in dominate fashion 25-8. Edinboro started the game by going up 9-1 off Burrelli's service. The Scots continued to go on many more runs led by the service of sophomore Emelia Rowell and Monn. Edinboro held Slippery Rock to a hitting percentage of -.143 in the opening set and only five kills. Edinboro's attack posted a hitting percentage of .333 along with 12 team kills. The Scots won the last two points of the first set and won 25-8.
In the second set, Edinboro posted the most efficient attack all evening. The Scots offense was too much for the Rock as they won the second set 25-17. Midway through the set, Edinboro scored four straight points to go up 11-7. The run consisted of three straight kills by Sterkel, Eldredge, and Burrelli. The two teams then traded points until it a kill by Monn and Sharp put Edinboro up 17-12. In the second set Edinboro came away with 16 kills along with a hitting percentage of .429. Edinboro would score four out of the last five points in the set. A kill by Monn in the final point concluded the second set 25-17 Edinboro.
The third set consisted of a back-and-forth battle between the two PSAC West schools. Throughout the set, there were four ties and one lead change. Edinboro's biggest run in the set was when scored three straight points on Rowell's service to go up 16-13. The run gave Edinboro their first lead of the set, and they would never look back. The final two points of the match went to Edinboro off Slippery Rock errors. Edinboro won the third and final set 25-18.
Edinboro will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16, when they travel on the road to match up against Seton Hill University at 1 p.m.
