WVB | RECAP | Women’s Volleyball defeats Cal on the road in four sets

Edinboro, Pa. - The Edinboro University volleyball team was victorious in four sets (25-19, 22-25, 25-20, 25-23) over California University of Pennsylvania, in a PSAC West match up on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center in California, PA. With the win the Fighting Scots improved to (17-3) overall and (9-1) in the PSAC West. The Vulcans fall to (9-10) overall and (4-6) in conference play.  

On the offensive attack for Edinboro, junior Bella Burrelli led the way with a game-high 16 kills, freshman Abby Monn contributed nine kills at a .241 hitting percentage, and senior Sally Sterkel added six kills on 14 attempts 

In the assists department senior Alicia Eldredge was effective with 34 assists and only one error 

Edinboro found success in the Ace department as well, Burrelli, sophomore Emelia Rowell, and freshman Abigale Soboleski all recorded two aces each 

On the defensive side Edinboro was able to hold Cal to a .159 hitting percentage 

Freshman Carly Pry led the way with a team-high 15 digs, Monn contributed 14, and Burrelli added 12 

Eldredge led Edinboro with two blocks on the afternoon 

In the opening set of the game Edinboro came out focused and was victorious 25-19. Midway through the first set, the Scots capitalized off four-straight errors by Cal and went up 12-9. Later in the set Edinboro rattled off five-straight points off an ace by Pry and a kill by sophomore Natalie Pallone. In the first set Edinboro was effective on the offensive attack, the Scots posted 13 kills and hit at a .200 percentage. Edinboro scored the final three points of the set with kills by Eldredge and Burrelli. Edinboro won the first set 25-19. 

In the second set Cal was able to strike back and win the set 25-22 over Edinboro. Cal jumped out to an early lead in the second set off Sarah Moehring's service, Cal was up 7-3. Edinboro was down 11-4, when they began to respond. The Scots proceeded to go on a seven-point run off junior Jessie Michel's service to make it 11-11. Cal responded with another run of their own and went up 17-13. In the second set Cal posted a game-high 15 kills. Cal would score the final two points of the set with two kills. Cal won the second set 25-22. 

In the third set Edinboro was able to regain momentum and win the set 25-20. In the beginning of the set, Cal shot out to another early lead by going 9-3. Later in the third set four-straight points put Edinboro up 20-18 with kills by Sterkel and Burrelli. The Scots recorded their best hitting percentage of the afternoon in the third set, at .219. Edinboro would score five out of the last six points of the set. The final point came from an ace by Eldredge, Edinboro won the set 25-20. 

The fourth and final set was a battle, but ultimately Edinboro was victorious in the set 25-23. The set consisted of 10 ties and seven lead changes. Cal once again started out the set by gaining a lead. Cal was up 8-3 once Edinboro began to respond. The Scots scored four-straight points off Rowell's service, Monn recorded two kills during the run. Later in the set Edinboro scored three-straight off Rowell's service once again. Rowell posted back-to-back aces and put the Scots up 21-20. Edinboro scored four of the last five points of the set. The final point of the set was a kill by Burrelli, Edinboro won the set 25-23.  

Edinboro will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 29, when they travel on the road to match up against the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown at 7 p.m.
