WVB | RECAP | Women’s Volleyball falls to Daemen College on the road in four sets

Edinboro, Pa. - The Edinboro University volleyball team fell short and were defeated in four sets (21-25, 21-25, 25-23, 24-26) by Daemen College, in a non-conference match up on Thursday night at Lumsden Gymnasium in Amherst, NY. With the lost the Fighting Scots fall to (12-2) overall. The Wildcats improve to (10-6) overall. 

On the offensive attack for Edinboro, senior Sally Sterkel lead the way with 13 kills and posted a hitting percentage of .500, junior Bella Burrelli also contributed eight kills for the Scots 

Senior Alicia Eldredge lead Edinboro with 29 of the teams total 34 assists 

On defense freshman Carly Pry led the way with 15 digs, Eldredge and freshman Abby Monn each contributed 11 digs of their own 

Edinboro did control the blocks department, they recorded seven total blocks compared to Daemen's five 

Sophomore Natalie Pallone led the team with four blocks, freshman Michaella Cloonan contributed three, and Eldredge added two of her own 

In the opening set of the match Edinboro went back and forth with Daemen until they eventually dropped the set 21-25. Halfway through the first set Daemen went on a five-point run that consisted of two kills for the Wildcats. Later in the set, the Scots recorded back-to-back kills by Sterkel and Burrelli which were both assisted by Eldredge and found themselves down 18-20. Daemen responded with another run of their own, and won the first set 21-25. 

The second set Edinboro got off to solid start and gained a lead. With a few kills by Cloonan early on, the Scots were up 8-3. Daemen would respond throughout the set with multiple runs that was led by their server Sam Logan. Logan recorded three aces in the second set. Both teams struggled on the attack in the set, Edinboro was held to a hitting percentage of .028 and Daemen hit .030. Daemen would score the final four out of five points in the set. Daemen won the second set 21-25. 

In the third set Edinboro began to gain momentum and won the set 25-23. Early in the set Edinboro went up with a decent lead when Pry recorded an ace and made it 14-9 in favor of the Scots. Later in the set, Daemen five straight points to tie up 19-19. Edinboro responded scoring three straight points including kills by Sterkel and Cloonan. The third set Edinboro posted their best hitting percentage of the night at .125, and also had 13 kills. The last point of the set was a kill by Monn, who was assisted by Eldredge. Edinboro won the set 25-23 

The fourth set was another battle between Edinboro and Daemen. The beginning of the set the two teams continued to trade leads. In the fourth set there were nine ties and four lead changes. After back-to-back kills by Monn and Sterkel, Edinboro found themselves up 19-13. From then on, Daemen would gain momentum. The Wildcats went on a run that consisted of three straight kills. The set was eventually tied at 24-24. Daemen scored off a Edinboro error, and then recorded a game winning kill. Daemen won the fourth and final set 24-26. 

Edinboro will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 9 when they travel on the road to match up against Mercyhurst University at 4 p.m.
