Fairmont, W.Va. – Six different players reached double figures as the Edinboro men's basketball team topped Bluefield State College 113-104 in overtime on the second day of the Joe Retton Classic hosted by Fairmont State.
At the end of regulation, the score was knotted at 95. The Big Blue opened the extra frame on a 6-2 run to take a 101-97 advantage. Edinboro answered with an 16-3 run to capped by 7-of-8 free throws to earn the victory.
With 3:41 to play in regulation, the Fighting Scots trailed 90-83. Edinboro trimmed the lead to 93-92 after a Deonte Robertson free throw. After Bluefield State hit a pair of free throws,
Jaryn Simpson drew a foul with two seconds remaining and made all three free throws to tie the game and send the Scots into overtime.
Edinboro took a 40-39 lead into the half. The Scots came out hot to start the second building a 54-46 advantage with a 15-7 spurt keyed by seven points from Robertson.
The first half was a see-saw affair with nine ties and five lead changes with the Fighting Scots holding a slim 40-39 advantage at the break.
Robertson led the Scots recording a double-double with 30 points and 14 rebounds. He added four assists, two blocks and two seals.
Dominique Keyes also recorded a double-double with a team-high 18 boards and 19 points. Simpson tallied 24 points including the three free throws that sent the game to overtime.
Kierell Green chipped in 16 points and five rebounds.
Alex Jay netted 11 while
Cyrie Coates finished with 10 points.
The 113 points was the first time the Edinboro went over 100 points since Dec. 16, 2015 when they scored 105 against Gannon. It is also the most since the Scots scored 144 against Penn State DuBois on Nov. 25, 2014.
The Scots improved to 1-1 on the season and return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Cleveland State for a 7 p.m. tip.
