WSOC | RECAP | Edinboro can keep their heads held high as season ends in PSAC quarter-final loss to Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, PA - Edinboro (9-9) saw their season come to an end in the PSAC quarter-final stage with a 2-0 loss to Mercyhurst (14-4-1). The Fighting Scots battled till the final whistle of a game that saw two unfortunate goals decide the game.

Mercyhurst started the game in similar fashion to the last meeting with early shots testing Anna Voelker. Anna ended the game with a season high 10 saves in the game from a Mercyhurst total of 20 shots at goal, 13 on target.

Edinboro very nearly took the lead in the 12th minute, albeit against the run of play when Cameron Bujnoski cut on to her left foot just inside the area, forcing a solid save from Maddie Elbro low to her right.

The breakthrough in the game would come from the penalty spot for Mercyhurst. Amber Thomas converted from the spot in the 16th minute, providing the lead for the Lakers going into halftime.

Edinboro looked to put pressure on Mercyhurst from the kickoff for the second half with a couple half chances in the early stages. The Lakers counteracted the Edinboro pressure with some quick play that saw Emily Mijares break down the right wing, a dangerous cutback was unfortunately converted into the Edinboro goal by the scrambling Fighting Scots defence in the 48th minute.

The Fighting Scots spirit was still to be seen for the remainder of the second half with tough midfield play shown by Natalia Corrales, Jenna Derbis and Maggie Hays. Clear goal scoring chances would prove hard to come by for Edinboro in the end, having five shots at goal and two on target.

The Fighting Scots ended the season 9-9 overall, Brittnie Spithaler secured the scoring ad point leader title for Edinboro. Brittnie had five goals and two assists in a productive final season for The Fighting Scots. Closest to Brittnie were freshman Reece Enochs and Morgan Wissner. Reece ended the season with three goals and three assists whilst Morgan finished with four goals to her name.

Thank you to all of our Senior players in their final season for their hard work and dedication. We look forward to seeing our returning players and new recruits next year back at Sox Harrison Stadium.
