Wheeling, W.Va. – The Edinboro volleyball team fell 3-1 to host and top-seed Wheeling University in the NCAA Atlantic Regional semifinal Friday night.
The Cardinals jumped out winning the first set 25-19. The Scots fell behind 6-3 and scored two of the next three to trim the lead to 7-5. Wheeling scored five straight points to go up 12-5. The Cardinal lead didn't fall below four the rest of the set.
Wheeling carried their momentum into the second set building a 17-8 lead before winning the set 25-14.
In the third, the teams traded runs to a 16-16 tie. The Scots scored four straight points to build the lead to 20-16. The teams traded points to make the score 21-18, but three points keyed by kills from
Abby Monn and Sally Strerkel to give the Scots a set point opportunity. After the Cardinals scored, Monn recorded the kill to win the set 25-19.
Edinboro battled in the fourth. Trailing 24-22,
Bella Burrelli notched a kill and a Wheeling error tied the score at 24. The teams traded points before the Cardinals scored the final two points to close out the match 27-25.
Burrelli and Monn each tallied 13 kills.
Erica Sharp added 10 kills.
Alicia Eldredge picked up 51 assists on 59 total Scot kills.
Sterkel, Burrelli and Sharp each tallied two blocks.
Carly Pry paced the Scots with 15 digs.
Edinboro finished 22-7 overall.
