Mansfield, Pa. – After playing in overtime the night before, the Edinboro men's basketball team found themselves in a similar situation at Mansfield University on Saturday night. This time around the Fighting Scots walked away with the win, as they defeated the Mountaineers 101-97 in double overtime.
Free throws by Jaryn Simpson and Cyrie Coates late in the second overtime would seal it for Fighting Scots after a last second three-point attempt by Mansfield fell short.
The game was close for the entire night as there were 14 ties and 15 lead changes throughout the game. In the final three minutes of the first half, Edinboro and Mansfield would exchange the lead four times. Deontae Robertson hit a jumper in the paint with three seconds remaining in the half as Edinboro went into the lockeroom down 37-36.
Late in the second half Edinboro was down five points with less than three minutes in regulation. An offensive rebound and layup by Dominique Keyes would spark an 8-0 run from the Fighting Scots and put Edinboro up 76-73. With less than a minute left, Mansfield responded with an and-one while converting the free throw to tie the game at 76-76 and sent the game into overtime.
In the first overtime a dunk by Keyes would tie things up at 89-89 with 32 seconds left. After a missed layup by Mansfield on the other end, Keyes grabbed the rebound and launched it up the court to Robertson for the final shot, but it was no good. The two PSAC teams headed to a second overtime.
The final overtime Edinboro was able to seal up the hard-fought victory by converting from the charity stripe. The Fighting Scots were 8-9 from the line compared to the Mountaineers 4-6 in the final five minutes.
Keyes led the way for Edinboro after recording his second double-double of the season with a team-high 31 points, along with 14 rebounds, and four blocks.
Simpson was one assist shy of a triple-double when he posted 22 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists. Simpson was also 12-13 from the free throw line.
Coates followed them with 22 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. While Robertson finished with 16 points.
Edinboro will remain idle until their next game on Dec. 16, when they host Bloomsburg at 7:30 p.m.
