Game Recap: Softball |

Fighting Scots softball hosted the University of Pitt-Johnstown in home opener Wednesday night

EDINBORO, Pa. - The Fighting Scots welcomed PSAC rival Pitt-Johnstown for a doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. The games marked the Fighting Scots first home action since 2019 and served as the back half of the four-game set against the Mountain Cats.

Game 1: UPJ 10, Edinboro 8
The Fighting Scots rallied late to bring the final to a two-run defecit.

Game one of the afternoon featured an offensive showcase with the teams combining for 18 runs and 26 hits. The Fighting Scots held onto an early lead 2-0 heading into the third inning. The Fighting Scots were able to get on the board in the first inning when Maura Pasquale doubled with one out. With two away, Mackenzie Quider was able to blast a single to left field to plate Pasquale. In inning number two, Edinboro added to their lead on the RBI triple from Nya Adams that plated Morgan Spitler.

In the third, the Fighting Scots struggled to get out the inning and the Mountain Cats scored six runs to take a 6-2 lead. UPJ continued the hot hitting by adding two more runs in the fourth to extend their lead to 8-2. However, the Fighting Scots would not go down quietly.

In the bottom of the fourth, Edinboro began to chip away at the lead and plated two runs to make the score 8-4. Nya Adams was able to single home Lauren Bush and Pasquale's single would plate Bush.

In the top of the fifth, UPJ was able to plate two more to take a 10-4 lead heading into the final two and a half innings. Edinboro was able to score two runs of their own in the fifth thanks to the two-run blast to left field off the bat of Mackenzie Quider which scored Jolene Teller who singled earlier in the inning.

Jolene Teller would provide some clutch hitting of her own in the next inning as she singled to center to score Pasquale and Lauren Gierlak. The Fighting Scots trailed 10-8 heading into the seventh.

Jade Renner was able to hold the Mountain Cats out of the scoring column in the bottom of the seventh, but the comeback attempt fell short as Edinboro was held scoreless in the final frame.

Game 2: UPJ 21, Edinboro 0 (Five Innings)

The Fighting Scots got hits from Jolene Teller (single), Cheyenne Shughart (single), Mackenzie Quider (single).

After mashing a home run in game one, Quider continued her hot hitting with a single in game two for the Scots.

Dan Gierlak used a runaway game two as an opportunity to play 21 total players, who are anxious to get reps they missed out on over the offseason.

The season series between the Mountain Cats and Fighting Scots is now even at two games a piece.
