Edinboro softball splits in games vs. Seton Hill; Sral picks up third victory of the season

Edinboro, Pa. – Good pitching was the theme of the day for both teams as the Fighting Scots split their Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with the Seton Hill Griffins. Edinboro is now 3-3 on the season with an identical record in the PSAC.

Game 1 – Edinboro 3, Seton Hill 1

In an offensive struggle, Macy Sral proved to have her best stuff to improve to 3-1 on the season in a 3-1 win over Seton Hill. She went the distance for Edinboro, pitching a complete game and allowing just one run on five hits. She also struck out three Griffins on the afternoon.

Offensively, the Fighting Scots collected seven total hits with Maura Pasquale and Stephanie Krick each collecting a multi-hit game in game number one of the day. The Fighting Scots capitalized on the Seton Hill miscues early in the ball game, scoring two of their three runs in the second inning.

After a Cheyenne Shugart single and a Maya Kozup double to kick off the top of the second, Morgan Spitler reached on a fielder's choice. On the play, Shugart was able to score on a throwing error by the second basemen and Kozup would also come around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop. The two early runs proved to be enough insurance as Sral limited the base runners and the defense backed her up well all game.

While Seton Hill scored a run of their own in the bottom of the second, the Fighting Scots were once again able to take a two-run lead when in the top of the seventh inning, Stephanie Krick singled to center with one out. Next, Nya Adams laid down a sacrifice bunt that saw Krick safely advance to second and her reach first safely. After a Gierlak ground out, Pasquale singled to center field and Krick was able to come around and score from second.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Griffins threatened with a baserunner on and one out. Sral was able to get Seton Hill to hit into a lineout double play to end the game and secure the victory.

When asking Sral what went right in this ball game and what has gone right for her on the bump this season, she spoke about both the preparation and her teammates behind her. "I really hit my spots well today. I was getting hitters to chase on the pitches I wanted them to and I was missing off the plate in the right locations. I have also been glad to have a solid defense behind me this season as well to make plays to help us win."

Game 2 – Seton Hill 4, Edinboro 1

The Fighting Scots were able to hold the Griffins to just four runs in game number two, but this was not enough as Seton Hill got the 4-1 victory over Edinboro.

The Fighting Scots were able to get the first run of the game as Lauren Gierlak singled to left field to lead off the game. She then was able to steal second and get into scoring position with no outs. Pasquale was able to reach base next, but Gierlak was out at third. This left Pasquale on second with one out. Jolene Teller was able to reach base next on an error and Pasquale moved up sixty feet to have runners at the corners with one out. Kozup was able to hit Pasquale in by way of an RBI groundout, with Teller advancing to second on the play. Unfortunately, it was the lone run of the ball game for Edinboro.

Seton Hill was able to score three runs in the bottom of the first to take a three-run lead after the first inning. The three runs proved to be enough for the win, but the Griffins added an insurance run in the fight inning to make it a 4-1 lead. Logan Hartman remained perfect on the season for Seton Hill, advancing to 5-0 on the season.

First-year Jade Renner pitched five and a third innings in relief, allowing just one run on three hits. She also struck out three Griffins in the game.

Edinboro is back in action tomorrow afternoon with a doubleheader against PSAC and Erie County rival Gannon University. The games are slated to be played at 2:30 and 4:30 p.m.
