Game Recap: Softball |

Teller joins 100-hit club and Lauren Gierlak played her 100th game in Wednesday night doubleheader with Gannon

ERIE, Pa. – The 2021 season was not a guarantee for Jolene Teller, who hit a liner into the outfield for hit number 100 in her collegiate career.

It came in the seventh inning of game one against the Gannon Golden Knights. A team that she has an extensive history against as a graduate transfer from Mercyhurst University.

As a player at her previous school, her first collegiate homerun came against the same team.

Wednesday night, Edinboro cut into the Gannon lead with two runs in the third inning. Cheyenne Shughart drove in Lauren Gierlak and Maura Pasquale with a single into centerfield on a full count.

The fifth inning saw Maya Kozup come to the plate with bases loaded, when she was hit by a pitch, plating Gierlak once again. Shughart then hit a sacrifice fly into right field to tie the contest at four.

From there, Gannon took over and won by a 10-4 final.

Lauren Gierlak stole a base and went two-for-three.

Macy Sral took a no decision and struck out three across four innings. Dylan Claycomb struck one out in two innings of relief.

Jolene Teller:

"My career has been an emotional rollercoaster. In most of my games since freshman year, I have always been a consistent hitter in the box. I take a lot of pride in that. After the success I had at Mercyhurst, I was excited to have the opportunity here at Edinboro.

It was not until after I decided I was going to forego my redshirt last year when I realized I was a good season away from 100 hits! I started off last spring hot, the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and I was 6 hits away from 100. I needed to come back to reach that goal. Every practice, every rep, I thought about that accomplishment and how close I was.

I had the opportunity to get my 99th and 100th hit at Seton Hill and that is all I could think of. I tried but I did not get it there. I took a moment after seton hill, the night Before Gannon, to break it down and reset my mind. I had to erase my thoughts and just trust in myself. Also, I love playing at Gannon, hitting my first career homerun there and having great success against that team, I knew the hits would come. In the seventh inning of game one, my 100th hit came, and it felt so good. It was a line drive that I can still feel coming off the bat. My first goal for the season was accomplished. I am so happy that I was able to accomplish it playing for Edinboro. This team is the best team that I have been a part of, we are a family, and we have each other's backs. Some of the girls made me posters and others were jumping around being just as or more excited as I was. It was an incredible feeling.

Reflecting on my career so far, I have accomplished a lot but there is still more left. I am excited to see the further accomplishments our team will make together!"

Game Two marked Lauren Gierlak's 100th game as a Fighting Scot.

Edinboro rallied in the sixth inning when Lexi Klatt stole second forcing a throwing error that scored Kearson Wagner. Kayla Terwilliger then hit a sacrifice fly to score Klatt, before Anna McGinnis took home on a wild pitch to make the final a respectable 5-3 score.

Maura Pasquale added a single and double in game two. Lauren Gierlak singled and stole two bases. Jolene Teller added two base knocks, and Sam Martz singled and scored. Lexi Klatt stole one base.

Jade Renner threw a quality game as the starter in game two, holding Gannon scoreless until the fourth inning. Lauren Bush fanned three in two innings of relief.

Edinboro is scheduled to take on Mercyhurst University Saturday at home, beginning at 1 p.m.
