Shughart, Teller go deep in Saturday doubleheader against visiting Mercyhurst

EDINBORO, Pa.Jolene Teller knew the day would come where she would face her former team, and when the moment came, she crushed two home runs in as many games.

Mercyhurst traveled to Edinboro Saturday for a sunny doubleheader.

Game one scoring for the Scots began in the second with a Morgan Spitler single to left center that scored Cheyenne Shughart and moved Maya Kozup to third.

The scoring continued in the third inning as Edinboro cut the Hurst advantage to 5-3 with a Shughart single that scored Lauren Gierlak and a run scored via error.

In the fourth, Nya Adams scored Gierlak again with a single

The fifth inning is when Teller pelted a two-run homer, plating Maura Pasquale. Shughart followed with a solo shot and the lead was slimmed to 12-7. Shughart finished 3-for-3 in game one.

Mercyhurst went on to take the final in game one 16-7.

Gierlak finished with two hits in the game and a stolen base. She also made a highlight reel diving catch in left center field.

Nya Adams singled and scored an RBI.

Maura Pasquale had a hit, a stolen base, and scored two runs.

Morgan Spitler singled and accounted for an RBI of her own.

Jade Renner had two strikeouts in the contest in relief of Macy Sral.

 

Game two started out better for the Fighting Scots as Lauren Gierlak reached by error, putting the ball in play to left field. Gierlak would advance to second on the play allowing Brooklyn Magill to move to third and Spitler to score.

Mercyhurst did their damage in the third, fourth and fifth before Edinboro staged a comeback beginning in the sixth. Samantha Martz doubled to score Stephanie Krick and Spitler.

Then in the seventh inning, Teller hit a big fly to left field, scoring two and making game two an 8-5 final.

Gierlak finished with one hit. Pasquale went 3-for-4. Teller was 2-for-4. Other Fighting Scot hits came from Spitler (double), Magill, Krick (double), and Martz.

Lauren Bush pitched 4 and 1/3 innings, striking out three.

The Fighting Scots are scheduled to travel to Mercyhurst Wednesday for a doubleheader. Game on is at 2:30 and game two is set for 4:30.

No visiting team spectators will be permitted at the site of competition, according to Mercyhurst's fan policy pertaining to COVID-19 mitigation.
