Women’s Basketball Has Comeback Bid Come Up Short at IUP

Indiana, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team had their fourth quarter comeback bid come up short in a 76-67 loss to No. 21 IUP Wednesday night in PSAC West action.

The Scots found themselves down 12, 56-44, with 9:03 left in the fourth. Edinboro answered back with a 15-5 run capped by a pair of Rana Elhusseini free throws with 3:20 remaining to cut the Crimson Hawk lead to 61-59.

Haley Sims hit a 3-pointer with 43 seconds left to trim the deficit to 70-67, but IUP closed out the game 6-of-8 from the free throw line to close out the game and set the final.
Edinboro jumped out to a 15-9 lead in the first quarter. IUP scored the last three points of the half to trim the lead to 15-12 after one.

The Crimson Hawks scored the first six points of the second quarter to retake the lead 19-15. A Monica Brown triple and Macie Jarrett layup but the Scots back up 20-19. The teams traded baskets leaving the score tied at 25 before nine straight IUP points gave them a 34-25 edge with 1:04 left in the second. Edinboro pushed back with a 5-0 run to close the second keyed by four points from Brown.

In the third, IUP took advantage of a slow start from the Scots to grow their largest lead of the game, 49-36 at the 3:09 mark. Two free throws from Bella Burrelli sandwiched between old-fashioned 3-point plays from Gillian Fisher and Lauren Mullen cut the lead to 51-44 with 1:36 left in the third.

Fisher led the Scots with 15 points to go with four rebounds and four assists. Brown added 14 points, four board and three helpers. Elhusseini also reached double-figure scoring with 10 points as well as seven assists.

Rajah Fink paced the Crimson Hawks with 20 points and 11 boards. Kiera Baughman added 18 points and eight rebounds.

The Scots return to action next Wednesday with a trip to Gannon. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
