Last Second Field Goal Lifts Football to Victory Over Mercyhurst

Erie, Pa. – Richie Pekmezian split the uprights with 5 seconds to play capping an 11-play 63-yard drive to lift Edinboro to a 16-13 victory Saturday afternoon at Saxon Stadium.

Mercyhurst tied the game on a 22-yard Brian Alsobrooks' field goal with 2:46 in the fourth. After a solid kickoff return put the ball at Edinboro 33, two completions moved the ball to the 45. Edinboro advanced the ball to the Mercyhurst 43 before Isaac Bernard connected with Thaddeus Standfield for 25 yards to the Laker 18.

"I felt on the sideline when we held them to a field goal we were going to win that football game," said head coach Jake Nulph. "There was no panic, we had energy and that is a credit them and to our offensive staff for having them ready to go and win the football game."

After an incompletion, Bernard hit Mike Watkins on an out route to the Laker nine. Karamago Sylla rushed up the middle to the Mercyhurst 4-yard line setting up the Pekmezian game winner.

Edinboro jumped out to an early lead after Pekmezian finished a nine-play 53-yard drive with a 34-yard field goal at the 7:49 mark of the first quarter.

On the first play from scrimmage on the ensuing Mercyhurst possession, JR Tellington tipped a screen pass to himself and returned the interception 17-yards to extend the lead to 10-0 with 7:03 remaining in the first quarter.

The defense set up the next Scot score as well. Anthony Mendicino intercepted Mike Lowery and returned it 17 yards to the Laker 28. Edinboro advanced to the Mercyhurst 10, but had the drive stall out before Pekmezian hit a 27-yarder to make it 13-0 early in the second.

The teams traded punts, before Mercyhurst got on the board with a 33-yard field goal with 9 seconds to play in the first half.

After a scoreless third quarter, Dustin Shoaf scored on a 13-yard run to trim the Edinboro advantage to 13-10 with 10:07 left in the fourth.

Clay Cunningham had another strong day leading the Scots in tackles with 14. Tellington added 11 tackles to go with his interception touchdown.

Bernard finished the day 27-41 for 241 yards. Standfield recorded his second 100-yard receiving game of the season with 12 catches for 129 yards. Sylla paced the rushing attack with 38 yards on 13 carries.

Shoaf led the Laker offense with 103 yards rushing and the lone touchdown. Jacob Holl led the defense with 13 tackles.

The Scots return to action on Saturday when they host Gannon on Homecoming. The Scots will honor the 1982 PSAC West Championship team at halftime. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
