Edinboro, Pa.-- The Edinboro volleyball team earned another strong home win on Saturday afternoon against PSAC West conference opponent IUP in four sets (25-16, 18-25, 25-18, 25-18). With the win, the Scots improved to (16-6) overall and (6-4) in conference play.
In four sets played, Edinboro recorded 12 more kills and four less errors than the Crimson Hawks. Edinboro finished with a (.281) hitting percentage compared to IUP's (.157) clip.
In the opening set Edinboro came jumping out of the gates with 16 kills on a (.324) hitting percentage. Suddenly, a kill by Natalie Pallone put Edinboro up 9-3 after six consecutive points. Later, three-straight kills from Bella Burrelli were followed up by back-to-back aces from Emelia Rowell as the Scots led 18-7. Then back-to-back Edinboro kills from Alicia Eldredge and Erica Sharp qualified the Scots for a set point. Finally, Sharp retired the set with a kill to advance 25-16.
It was then IUP's turn in the second set. The Crimson Hawks recorded 17 kills on a (.485) clip to open up the second set of the match. A quick 6-0 start from IUP consisted of five-straight kills. Later, IUP would continue to pour on the points as back-to-back kills put the Crimson Hawks up 9-2. Edinboro continued to fight as back-to-back kills from Burrelli, and Pallone put the Scots within four points. Ultimately, Edinboro's effort came up short in the set as a Fighting Scot service error closed the set at 25-18.
In the third set Edinboro would counter by using their defensive talents to control momentum. The Scots held the Crimson Hawks to a (-.028) hitting percentage in the set and only allowed eight kills. Early on the two PSAC West teams continued to trade lead changes. An IUP run put them ahead 8-6, only to have the Scots steal the lead right back with their own four-point run. Edinboro's run put them ahead 10-8 and was fueled by one block and kill from both Burrelli and Sharp. Later, Eldredge and Sally Sterkel each produced two block assists during a run that also included an ace from Abigaile Soboleski. Eventually a kill from Burrelli and assist from Carly Pry was enough for Edinboro to retire the set at 25-18.
Edinboro knew it would take a valiant effort to put away the Crimson Hawks in four sets and that is just what occurred. The Scots recorded their best hitting performance of the evening with a (.361) clip for the set. The beginning of the set was another arrangement of tug-of-war for the lead as a kill from Burrelli put the Scots up 9-6 early. IUP then countered with a 6-1 run as they gained a 12-10 lead off a bad set from Edinboro. The Scots then turned around and sparked their own 7-1 run that finished with a Pallone kill. Edinboro continued to pile on more kills, this time from Sterkel and Burrelli to go up 22-17 late. The Scots concluded the match with three consecutive points which came from a service ace from Rowell and kills from both Burrelli and Eldredge. Edinboro ultimately earned their revenge on IUP as they won the match in four sets.
