Soccer ends the season with valiant tie against California (Pa.)

Edinboro, Pa. – The Fighting Scots brought a close to their 2022 season with a 1-1 tie against California (Pa.).
Edinboro came from a goal down early in the first half to earn a point. Maggie Hays scored the equalizer from the penalty spot in the 49th minute, with Edinboro pushing till the very end in search of a winner.

The opening stages were controlled by Edinboro with much of the pressure directed towards the Vulcans goal. Cal. U took advantage of their first real chance of the game in the 12th minute. Ashley Venezia was able to latch onto a rebound inside the 6-yard box to open the scoring. Kaylee Lauriel had initially saved a header from Christyana Sims from close range but the rebound fell kindly to Venezia who waiting to pounce on the opportunity.

Edinboro replied with sustained pressure for much of the first half. Megan Malits had four attempts in the first half, forcing two saves from California's Emily Ouimet. Lex Boyk and Maggie Hays also saw efforts miss the goal by the finest of margins.

The Scots were unlucky to be behind at half-time with a close call on a penalty that was ultimately not called. This wouldn't be the case in the 49th minute when Maggie Hays fought her way on to the end of a Layne Kimple long ball. Hays won a penalty after Cal. U were judged to have handled the ball in the area. Hays slotted the ball home into the bottom right corner to bring the game level.

The game saw back and forth action for the remainder of the match, with both teams testing either goalkeeper. Kaylee Lauriel was called into action with two saves to keep the score level. Lauriel finished with three saves in total.

Neither side were able to find the game-winner in the closing stages, ultimately bringing the 2022 season coming to a close for both teams in a highly competitive game to see the season out.

Edinboro will return to action in the Spring with their schedule still to be released. Thank you all for your support this season and we hope to see you again in the New Year.
