Edinboro, Pa.-- The Edinboro volleyball team was defeated by Clarion in three sets (22-25, 23-25, 22-25) on Saturday afternoon in McComb Fieldhouse. With the loss, Edinboro falls to (15-5) overall and (5-3) in conference play.
In three sets played Clarion recorded 13 more kills and committed three less errors than the Fighting Scots. Edinboro finished with a (.114) hitting percentage compared to Clarion's (.173) clip.
In the first set Clarion would strike first as they jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead. Edinboro countered with a run of their own as a kill from Bella Burrelli tied the set at 8-8. The two teams continued to trade runs with each other. Later, a kill from Erica Sharp tied things back up at 16-16. Clarion would then string together four consecutive points to gain a 23-18 lead. Edinboro countered with a few points including a block that was shared between Sally Sterkel and Natalie Pallone as Edinboro trailed 23-21. A kill from Clarion retired the first set at 25-22 in favor of the Golden Eagles.
In set two the Fighting Scots jumped out to a commanding 6-1 lead off of the service of Alicia Eldredge. During the run Sterkel, Pallone, Burrelli and Eldredge all earned kills. The Scots remained steady after a block shared between Burrelli and Sterkel put Edinboro ahead 15-10. Clarion would come storming back with an impressive string of points ending in a kill that gave them a 19-17 lead. Later, back-to-back kills from Burrelli and Sterkel cut Clarion's lead to just 22-21. The Golden Eagles held on in the second set as a kill retired the set at 25-23 in favor of Clarion.
In the third set Edinboro once again jumped out to a comfortable lead. After a kill from Jessie Michel and a service ace from Emelia Rowell, the Scots led 8-4. Clarion would counter with six-straight points and gained a 13-10 lead after a kill. Later, another ace from Rowell cut the Clarion lead to just 19-17. Clarion earned their twenty-fourth point and had the match point in sight. Edinboro continued to fight as they scored three-straight points to cut the Golden Eagles lead to just 24-22. A Fighting Scots service error retired the set and match as Clarion prevailed 25-22 and won in three sets.
Edinboro will be back in action on Tuesday (Oct. 11) when they travel to Slippery Rock for a 7 pm start.
