Women’s Basketball Drops Decision to Gannon

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro University women's basketball team fell to visiting Gannon 66-54 Monday night in PSAC West action inside McComb Fieldhouse.

After falling behind 4-0 out of the gate, Monica Brown and Rana Elhusseini hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Edinboro a 6-4 advantage. Gannon answered with a 7-0 run of their own to retake the lead 11-6. Bella Burrelli stopped the run with a layup, but the Golden Knights closed the first on an 8-2 spurt to take a 19-10 advantage into the second.

The Scots scored the first four points of the second on baskets by Gillian Fisher and Haley Sims trimming the lead to 19-14. The Golden Knights scored four straight to grow the lead to 23-14. Edinboro cut the lead to six three times in the second the latest, 27-21, after a Sims layup with 1:15 left in the quarter. Gannon extended the lead to 31-21 on buckets by Sydney Mitchell and Tori Obenrader before Elhusseini made a layup with 1 second on the clock to trim the halftime deficit to 31-23.

Gannon scored the first seven points of the third to extend the lead to 38-23. Elhusseini hit a pair of free throws to stop the run. The Gannon lead grew to as much as 17 with 1:57 on the clock before Burrelli scored a layup to make it 48-33 after three.

In the fourth, the Gannon lead grew to 23, 56-33 with 7:39 to play. Edinboro went on a 10-2 spurt to cut the lead to 58-43 at the 3:48 mark. The Golden Knights pushed the lead back to 64-45. The Scots closed the game on a 9-2 run to set the final.

Elhusseini led Edinboro with 17 points and four assists. Sims added 12 points, three boards and three helpers. Burrelli recorded a game-high 12 rebounds including nine on the offensive glass.

Samantha Pirosko led the Golden Knights with 25 points. Obenrader chipped in 10 points an six rebounds.

The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host IUP at 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
