Erie, Pa. -- The Edinboro men's tennis team won its sixth consecutive match and took full control of the PSAC conference on Saturday afternoon at Westwood Racquet Club, as they defeated Mercyhurst 5-2. With the win, Edinboro improves to (11-5) overall and (5-0) in conference play and now owns the top spot in the conference.
The Fighting Scots jumped out on top early after winning two of three doubles matches. Rocco Palombarini and Bruno Sabio defeated David Akinpetide and Milan Jankovic 6-3. In the third doubles match, Ruben Acuna and Kaio Sacchi got past Hristo Plasheski and Morris Haab 6-4, to ultimately clinch the doubles point for Edinboro.
In singles four of the six matches would be taken into a third set, as Edinboro would prevail. Sabio won his seventh straight as he got past Akinpetide in a close one 6-7, 6-3, 6-3. The pattern continued with Acuna as he was victorious over Ben Davis 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Acuna is now (15-1) on the season for singles play.
Gustavo Martins won his eleventh win of the year when he defeated Jankovic 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Thibault Dorval imroved to (10-4) in singles after he took care of Noha De Sousa Pereira 6-1, 6-3.
Edinboro will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Ashland University at 2 p.m. for the regular season finale.
