Edinboro, Pa. – A pair of strong pitching performances and timely hitting helped the Edinboro softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Gannon on the first home date of the season Friday afternoon.
The Scots took game one in 3-2 in walk-off fashion before scoring a 4-1 victory in the second contest.
Trailing 2-0, the Fighting Scot bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh. Gannon starter Kennedy DeMatteis had not allowed a hit before
Cheyenne Shughart doubled down the right field line.
Mackenzie Quider drew a walk. Pinch runners
Kearson Wagner and
Olivia Weller each moved up a base on a wild pitch before
Maya Kozup called game with a walk-off three-run blast over the left field fence to give Edinboro the 3-2 victory.
Gannon loaded the bases with one out in the top of the third. Kristina DeMatteis flew out to
Elizabeth Clark that scored Lauryn Rougeux but Clark's throw was cut off and the Golden Knight runner trying to advance to second was tagged out ending the threat with Gannon only holding a 1-0 lead. Gannon added a run in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 2-0.
Macy Sral picked up the win in the circle scattering seven hits over seven innings of work allowing two runs with four strikeouts and two walks.
In game two,
Lauren Bush shook off holding Gannon without another baserunner until a second walk in the top of the sixth. Bush carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning finishing with seven innings of work allowing one run on three hits with nine strikeouts.
While the Bush put up zeros, the bats got to work in the fifth. Quider led off with a single and Wagner came on to pinch run. After a lineout,
Maura Pasquale laid down a bunt single to put runners on first and second.
Kendra Keyser squared up a double to right center plating Wagner and Pasquale to make it 2-0.
Kayla Terwilliger doubled home Keyser to extend the lead to 3-0 Edinboro after five.
In the sixth, Quider provided an insurance run when she doubled home Weller to push the advantage to 4-0. Gannon got on the board in the seventh, but Bush struck out the side to close the game.
The Fighting Scots are back at home on Sunday at 1 p.m. for another PSAC West doubleheader with UPJ.
