Volleyball Concludes Weekend Tournament with back-to-back Sweeps

Frankfort, Ky.- The Edinboro University Volleyball team capped off the Kentucky State University Tournament with two quick sweeps. The Scots handled business Saturday morning by defeating the University of West Alabama in three sets. Later that afternoon, Edinboro would make it three wins in two days with a victory over Kentucky State University in just three sets. Edinboro exits the first weekend with a strong (3-1) start to the season.  

In the morning match against the University of West Alabama, Edinboro gained momentum quickly. Near the end of the first set the Scot's held a slight 20-18 lead. Edinboro would end the opening set by going on a 5-1 scoring run and won the set 25-19.  

In the second set Edinboro found themselves trailing to the Tigers 16-20 late. The Scots would turn things around with a 9-2 run, which was fueled by Edinboro's attack. During the run Bella Burrelli contributed three kills while Sally Sterkel and Erica Sharp added a kill each.  

The first two sets played into Edinboro's success for the third, as the match concluded with a kill from Jessie Michel and a final of 25-21. Sterkel and Burrelli paced the Scots with nine kills each, while Alicia Eldredge distributed 28 assists. On defense Carly Pry finished with a game-high 21 digs, along with three blocks from Sterkel. 

After just a two-hour break, Edinboro hit the floor for their final match of the weekend against the host Kentucky State. Immediately the Scots would grab the early lead and earn an exceptional 25-9 win in the first set. The Thorobreds fought harder in the second set, but still Edinboro would prevail 25-21.  

In the third and final set Edinboro's offense went into overdrive. The Scots capped off the third set with 16 kills while hitting at a (.600) clip. Edinboro won the final set 25-17, concluding their second sweep of the day.  

Edinboro's defense held the Thorobreds to a (.000) hitting percentage and forced 19 errors. Carly Pry added 16 digs to the defensive effort. On offense Bella Burrelli led the way with nine kills, followed by Natalie Pallone who added eight of her own. Alicia Eldredge dumped in a game-high 33 assists, while Pry served up four aces. 

Edinboro will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 2. when they compete in the Hall of Fame City Challenge tournament in Canton, Ohio.
