Football Falls on the Road at No. 5 Shepherd

Shepherdstown, W.Va. – The Edinboro football team dropped a 41-7 decision to No. 5 Shepherd Saturday afternoon at Ram Stadium.

Despite having their first 300-yard passing game since Sept. 1, 2018, the Scots couldn't over come the four turnovers and the Ram's rushing attack.

Shepherd was driving on the opening possession of the game, but found themselves with a fourth and six from the Edinboro 33-yard line and Clay Cunningham intercepted Tyson Bagent and returned it to the Scots 38. The Rams took an unsportsmanlike penalty pushing the ball to the Shepherd 43.

The Scots were able to move the football to the Shepherd 19, but Isaac Bernard was intercepted on third and seven giving the ball back to the Rams. Shepherd capitalized with a six-play 71-yard drive capped by a Ronnie Brown 39-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead.

On the ensuing Edinboro drive, the Scots fumbled and Shepherd extended the lead five-plays later with a seven-yard strike from Bagent to Kenneth Edelin. The Rams extended the advantage to 21-0 Brown's second touchdown run of the game with 35 seconds left in the first quarter.

Edinboro got on the scoreboard picking up chunks of yards. Facing a first and 15 at their own 27, Isaac Bernard hit Thaddeus Standfield for 19 yards. On the next play, Bernard connected with Mike Watkins for a 54-yard touchdown to trim the lead to 21-7.

The Rams pushed the lead to 28-7 going into the half on Brown's third rushing touchdown of the half.

Edinboro pushed their way into the redzone twice more in the second quarter, but a fumble and a missed field goal left the halftime deficit at 28-7.

The Scots took the opening possession of the second half down to the Shepherd 15-yardline, but another missed field goal left Edinboro still down by 21.

Shepherd forced a fourth Scot turnover and returned the interception nine yards to make the score 35-7 with 4:58 left in the third. The Rams tacked on one more score in the in the fourth to set the final.

"When you play a team of this caliber, you can't turn the ball over and give up the big play," said head coach Jake Nulph. "We continued to battle through the whole game and did some good things today and we will reload and get ready for next week."

Bernard finished the game with 338 yards, the first 300-yard game in almost three seasons to go with a touchdown.

Standfield led the receiving corps with 127 yards on seven catches. Watkins added five grabs for 87 yards and a score.

Micah Thomas paced the Edinboro defense with seven tackles, six solo. Reed Martin had four stops three behind the line of scrimmage.

Brown led the Shepherd offense with 278 yards rushing and three scores. Bagent finished 19-of-28 for 189 yards.

The Scots are back in action next Saturday when they host Bloomsburg in their home opener. Kickoff is slated for noon.
