Canton, Ohio -- The Edinboro volleyball team capped off the weekend at the Hall of Fame City Challenge by defeating Notre Dame College and falling to Davenport University. The Scots came out of the weekend by going (3-1) and now are (6-1) overall.
Edinboro's second match of the day turned into a thriller and went five-full sets. The Scot's came from behind and defeated Notre Dame in the final match of the tournament (21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 27-25, 16-14). The Falcons led 14-10 in the final set and were one point away from winning the match. Suddenly, Edinboro storms back with six-straight points to win the set 16-14.
In the first set Edinboro couldn't quite grab the lead after tying multiple times. Back-to-back kills from Natalie Pallone and Sally Sterkel knotted things up at 15-15. Notre Dame's (.225) clip helped them seal up the first set 25-21.
Edinboro bounced back in the second set and evened things up at one set apiece. A kill from Kasey Smith put Edinboro ahead 5-1 early. Late in the set, the Scots trailed the Falcons 20-23. Edinboro went on a run to close out the set by scoring five-straight points to retire the set. The run was fueled by kills from Erica Sharp, Natalie Pallone, and an ace from Grace Vaeth.
The third set involved the Falcons striking back and regaining the lead at 2-1. The stats were just about even in the third set as Edinboro hit at (.213) clip while Notre Dame hit at a (.214) clip. Notre Dame rattled off ten-straight points and built up a 19-8 lead. The Boro came storming back and almost won, as a service ace from Sharp put the Scots within two points.
The fourth set was another close battle that Edinboro just made it out alive and avoided defeat. In the set, the Scots recorded a match-high 17 kills on a (.205) clip. Late in the set a kill from Notre Dame knotted things up at 25-25. Edinboro would prevail as they took the next two points and won the set 27-25 behind a kill from Pallone.
The final set Edinboro fell behind and was one point away from defeat, as they trailed 10-14. The Scots flipped a switch and scored six unanswered points and grabbed an expectational win in five sets. The run was fueled by kills from Burrelli, Pallone, and an ace from Alicia Eldredge.
Erica Sharp finished with 16 kills while hitting at a (.355) clip and included two blocks.
Natalie Pallone added 16 kills of her own with a (.233) clip, as well as four digs.
Alicia Eldredge finished with a season-high 43 assists and added 15 digs
Bella Burrelli added 10 kills and 11 digs.
In the first match Edinboro fell to Davenport University in four sets (25-15, 12-25, 25-9, 16-25). The Panthers took advantage of their success on the attack and finished with 55 kills compared to the Scot's 36.
In the opening set Edinboro got going first, and quickly built a 10-3 lead after a kill from Bella Burrelli. Later in the set, back-to-back kills from Burrelli and Sally Sterkel put the Scots up 17-8. The first set was Edinboro's best of the match, the Scots hit at a (.360) clip and forced 10 errors.
Davenport countered by winning the next three sets and clinching the win in four sets. After scoring 25 points in the first set, Edinboro failed to score more than 16 points the rest of the way. Edinboro would finish with a (.115) hitting percentage.
Edinboro will be back in action next Friday when they host the Edinboro Invitational.
