Edinboro, Pa. – Despite a career-high 33 points from
Rana Elhusseini the Edinboro women's basketball team came out on the wrong end of a 93-82 decision to visiting Shippensburg Saturday afternoon in PSAC action at McComb Fieldhouse.
The Scots held a 47-44 advantage after a
Hayley Sims 3-pointer with 6:46 to play in the third. Shippensburg responded with nine straight points to pull ahead 53-47. After
Macie Jarrett and Ariel Jones traded 3-point buckets, Edinboro went on a 7-1 spurt of their own to cut the lead to 58-57 with 2:16 remaining in the third. Shippensburg closed the third on 9-2 run, taking a 67-59 lead into the final quarter.
Jarrett opened the fourth with a triple, but five straight points from Shippensburg extended the lead to 72-62. The Scots wouldn't be able to close the gap to less than eight the rest of the way.
Edinboro jumped out to an early lead when a 3-pionter by
Gillian Fisher and a layup by
Bella Burrelli put them up 10-6 at the 5:52 mark. The teams traded shots in the first with the Scots holding a 16-15 advantage after one.
Foul trouble plagued Edinboro in the second quarter as the Scots committed 12 fouls to just two by the Raiders. Shippensburg scored 12 of their 22 second quarter points at the free throw line, but Edinboro countered by going 4-of-9 from beyond the arc to take a 39-37 lead into the break.
Elhusseini added seven rebounds, five assists and a steal to her 33 points. Sims tallied 15 points. Fisher had a strong defensive game blocking six shots.
Ariel Jones paced the Raiders with 29 points. Lauren Pettis recorded a double-double with 23 points and 20 rebounds.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Cal. Tip off is set for 5:30 p.m.
