Kutztown, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team overcame a 16-point second half deficit to knock off host Kutztown 65-58 Friday afternoon in the PSAC opener for both teams.
The Scots trailed 46-30 at the 3:28 mark of the third quarter. Edinboro responded with a 12-0 run capped by a
Morgan Gentile bucket with 14 seconds left in the third to trim the lead to 46-42. Shannon Remolde hit a pair of free throws at the very end of the quarter to give Kutztown and 48-42 lead going into the fourth.
Edinboro carried their momentum into the final frame opening with a 10-2 spurt with buckets from four different players to grab a 52-50 advantage, their first leadoff the game, on a
Hayley Sims bucket with 6:57 on the clock. Abbey Hearn split a pair of free throws to trim the lead to 52-51, but the Scots answered with seven straight on baskets by
Jenna Babay, Gentile and
Allyson Kirby to make it 59-51 with 2:59 to play. The Golden Bears would get as close as six on several occasions, but the Scots did enough at the charity stripe to secure the win.
The teams traded baskets early with the Golden Bears taking a 7-5 lead. Kutztown extended its advantage with a 12-5 spurt capped by a Bella Arcuri 3-pointer with 22 seconds left in the first. Gentile hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 19-12 heading to the second.
In the second, the teams go off to a slow start offensively needing almost two minutes before Arcuri scored the first points of the quarter on a pair of free throws. Sims scored five points sandwiched around a Hearn triple to cut the lead to 24-17 with 7:01 on the clock. Edinboro used an 11-6 spurt to pull within two, 30-28, after a Sims trey with 3:30 to go in the half. Kutztown would score the last four points of the half to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
Kutztown scored eight straight out of the break before
Gillian Fisher got the Scots on the board with a layup at 5:31 to trim the lead to 44-30. Naia Pulliam notched a layup at 3:28 setting the stage for the Edinboro comeback.
Sims led all scorers with 28 points to go with five steals, four rebounds and three blocks. Gentile added 15 points and seven boards while Kirby chipped in nine points and six rebounds.
Hearn paced the Kutztown offense with 14 points and Pulliam added 13.
The Scots return to action on Saturday when they travel to West Chester for a 1 p.m. tipoff against the Golden Rams.
