Softball Splits Doubleheader With Gannon

Erie, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team split the opening doubleheader of the PSAC West portion of the season at Gannon on Tuesday afternoon.

In the opener, the Scots topped Gannon 5-3 before dropping a 4-3 decision in the nightcap.

Edinboro fell behind 1-0 in the first game when Gannon scored an unearned tally in the bottom of the third. The Scots answered immediately in the top of the fourth. Mackenzie Quider drew a walk and moved to second on a Cheyenne Shughart infield single. Maya Kozup doubled home Kearson Wagner who was running for Quider, but Shughart was thrown out trying to score tying the game 1-1. Stephanie Krick gave Edinboro the lead with a two-run homer.

Gannon pushed across a run in the bottom of the fourth trimming the lead to 3-2. Shughart singled home Maura Pasquale in the top of the fifth to extend the lead to 4-2. The Golden Knights got back within one with a run in the bottom of the fifth. It was Shughart that delivered again in the seventh doubling home Antonia Schaefer to set the final.

Shughart delivered three hits and two RBI. Krick, Pasquale and Schaefer each notched two hits. Macy Sral improved her record to 5-0 in the circle tossing seven innings allowing three runs, two earned, with four strikeouts and four walks.

In game two, the game was scoreless through four and a half innings before Gannon capitalized on an Edinboro error to take a 2-0 lead.

The Scots responded in the top of the sixth. Quider got the inning started with a one-out single. Wagner ran for Quider and moved to third on a Shughurt double. Kozup doubled to center plating two runs to tie the game. After a Krick flyout moved Kozup to score a wild pitch allowed her to score making it 3-2 Scots. Gannon would rally in the seventh getting a walk-off home run from Maddie Krause.

Shughart was the only Scot to record multiple hits in the second contest. Lauren Bush took the loss on the rubber allowing four runs, two earned, while striking out eight and not allowing a walk.

The Scots are now 7-7 overall and 1-1 in PSAC West play and are back in action on Friday when they travel to Pitt-Johnstown.
