Softball Posts Doubleheader Sweep of Clarion

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team won a pair of games over visiting Clarion in contrasting styles Sunday afternoon at the Edinboro Softball Field.
 
Cheyenne Shughart led an offensive explosion in the second game belting three home runs as the Scots rallied for a 12-11 victory in the second game. In the opener Edinboro won in walk-off fashion 3-2.
 
In game two, Clarion jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first getting RBI doubles form Rachel Helsley and Emily Buchleitner.
 
The Scots answered back in the bottom of the frame. Stephanie Krick opened the inning with a one-out single. Shughart doubled pushing Krick to third. Mackenzie Quider gave the Scots the lead with a home run over the leftfield fence.
 
The Golden Eagles retook the lead in the top of the third scoring seven runs keyed by an Amber Gilliam grand slam making it 9-3 Clarion.
 
Shughart cut the lead to 9-5 with her first home run, a two-run shot, in the bottom of the third. Clarion tacked on a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 10-5.
 
In the bottom of the frame, Antonia Schaefer led off with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Krick singled her home to make it 10-6. Shughart hit her second homer of the game cutting the lead to 10-8. Edinboro would pull even when a misplay of a Kendra Keyser groundball allowed a pair of runs to score.
 
Buchleitner gave Clarion the lead back in the top of the sixth with an RBI single. Shughart blasted her third home run of the game again plating Krick to give the Scots a 12-11 lead. Macy Sral would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh inning to seal the victory.
 
Shughart finished the day 4-for-4 with six RBI and four runs scored. Krick added three hits four runs and an RBI. Sral earned the win in relief with 1.1 shutout innings including three strikeouts.
 
In the opener, the Scots took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Schaefer reached on an error and moved to second on a Krick walk. Shughart moved the runners up with a bunt before Quider was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Morgan Spitler forced across Schaefer with a sacrifice fly and Maura Pasquale plated Krick with a single.
 
Allison Gilliam tied the game in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run. In the bottom of the seventh, Kayla Terwilliger doubled with one-out and then scored on a pair of wild pitches to give the Scots the 3-2 win.
 
The Scots made the most of their three hits with one each for Pasquale, Terwilliger and Kendra Keyser. Sral allowed two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk to earn the win in the circle
 
The Scots return to action on Tuesday when they host Mercyhurst at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
