Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro softball team rallied in each half of a PSAC West doubleheader to earn the sweep over visiting Mercyhurst Tuesday afternoon.
The Scots took the first game by a final of 12-11 before walking off the Lakers 9-8 in the second game.
Trailing 11-7 in the opener after the top of the fifth,
Maura Pasquale started the Edinboro half of the inning with a double. Pasquale would move to third on a
Kayla Terwilliger groundout and score on a groundout by
Kendra Keyser.
Lauren Bush restarted the rally with a single, moving to second on a base hit by
Antonia Schaefer.
Stephanie Krick singled home Bush and put runners on the corners.
Cheyenne Shughart singled home Schaefer and misplay in the outfield left runners on second and third trimming the lead to 11-10. A dropped foul pop up gave
Mackenzie Quider a second chance that she took advantage of doubling home two runs and giving the Scots the lead 12-11 and setting the final.
Mercyhurst scored first when Eliza Reynolds hit a two-run homer in the top of the first. Edinboro responded in the bottom of the frame when
Morgan Spitler plated
Cheyenne Shughart and
Mackenzie Quider with a three-run shot of her own.
The Lakers retook the lead in the top of the third scoring seven times to make the score 9-3. The Scots answered again with the long ball as Spitler hit her second of the game, this time a two-run blast to cut the lead to 9-5. Later in the inning, Terwilliger belted a two-run homer of her own to make it 9-7.
Edinboro got contributions up an down the lineup with seven of the nine starters recording two hits.
Jordan Lauer picked up the win in relief allowing two runs on six hits over 4.2 innings pitched. She struck out two and walked two.
In game two, Edinboro found themselves behind 8-6 heading to their last at bat. Pasquale doubled to start the inning, but was erased on a double play.
Kendra Keyser singled and went first to third on a
Lauren Bush single. Schaefer drew a walk to load the bases and Krick knotted the game with a single through the right side. Shughart ended the game with a walk off single.
The Lakers struck first with a run in the top of the first. Mercyhurst scored twice more in the third to grab a 3-0 lead. Edinboro hit a pair of sacrifice flys in the bottom of the third to trim the lead to 3-2.
The lead grew to 6-2 with a pair of runs in the fourth. Maddie Fry doubled home a run in the fifth to extend the lead to 7-2.
Krick led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run. Shughart singled and after a foul out, Spitler singled as well. Pasquale connected on an opposite field 3-run homer to cut the lead to 7-2. Mercyhurst scored in the top of the seventh to set up the Scots seventh inning rally.
Macy Sral scored the win in relief allowing one run on two hits in two innings of work. Krick led the offense with three hits. Schaefer, Shughart and Pasquale all tallied two hits.
The Scots return to action on Friday when they host Cal.
