Football Scores Road Victory Over Bloomsburg

Bloomsburg, Pa. – The Edinboro defense forced three turnovers and the offense racked up over 400 yards and were highly efficient on third down to lift the Fighting Scot football team to a 23-13 victory over host Bloomsburg Saturday afternoon.
 
With the game tied late in the second quarter, the Scots took over at their own 20 after a 12-yard punt return from Armani Bailey. Edinboro advanced the ball to the its own 45-yard line before Mitchell Ervin intercepted an Isaac Bernard pass to set up the Huskies at their own 49.
 
The Edinboro defense flipped the script when CJ Waldier forced a Ty Pringle fumble and Malcolm Johnson fell on it at the Edinboro 48. Bernard completions to Teagan Brown for nine and Thaddeus Standfield for 12 moved the Scots to the Bloomsburg 31. Reed Martin connected on a 48-yarder as time expired to send Edinboro into the half up 10-7.
 
The Fighting Scot defense came out of the break and forced a three-and-out setting up the offense with excellent starting field position, their own 45. The Scots covered the 55 yards in 11 plays taking 4:39 off the clock capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Keon Anderson. Along the way Edinboro was 3-for-3 on third down.
 
The teams traded punts with the Edinboro defense forcing a pair of three-and-outs. The Fighting Scots final scoring drive started with 1:20 left in the third quarter from their own 20. Brian Trobel ate up chunks of yards rushing for 47 yards on the drive before Bernard dropped a ball into Mike Watkins down the right sideline for a 31-yard touchdown pushing the Edinboro advantage to 23-7.
 
The Huskies would score once more on a 3-play 80-yard drive capped by an 11-yard touchdown from KJ Riley to Nas Jones with 9:31 left in the game.
 
The Scots ran over five minutes off the clock on their ensuing drive, but a Huskie interception gave Bloomsburg the ball back at the Edinboro 47 with 4:06 to play. Bloomsburg advanced the ball to the Edinboro 37 and looked to have a long gain when Riley found Peyton Persing over the middle, but Zach Malpica jarred the ball free and Kaiden Spiegel dove on it at the Scot 36 to put an end to the last Huskie threat of the game.
 
Edinboro jumped out early taking the opening kickoff and marching it 70 yards in eight plays with Trobel punching it in from four yards out.
 
Trobel carried the ball 29 times for 104 yards becoming the Scots first 100-yard rusher since CJ Reyes Diggs rushed for 178 against Clarion on Nov. 2, 2019. Bernard threw for 294 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. His favorite target was Watkins who hauled in nine passes for 108 yards and a score. Standfield caught six passes for 71 yards while Aaron Hopkins caught seven balls for 67 yards.
 
Ty Thorton made a team-high nine tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. Waldier added seven tackles, one for a loss, a forced fumble and a recovery.
 
The Scots held Bloomsburg to just 134 yards through the air and held the Huskies to 1-of-9 on third down. Edinboro was 12-of-19 on third down and possessed the ball for 39:10.
 
Edinboro is now 1-2 overall and will open PSAC West play on Saturday when they host California (Pa.) at 12 p.m. at Sox Harrison Stadium.
