Erie, Pa. – Four Scots reached double figure scoring as the Edinboro men's basketball team scored a 75-69 victory over Mercyhurst in PSAC West action on Owen McCormick Court Wednesday night.
Jeff Planutis completed an and-one with 5:47 to play to give the Lakers a 63-60 advantage.
Bernie Blunt trimmed the lead to one with a pair of free throws and
Ryan Ladjevich scored a layup at the 4:10 mark to give Edinboro a 64-63 lead.
Ian McNeill extended the lead 66-63 with a steal and a breakaway dunk at the 3:11 mark.
Aiden Reichert trimmed the lead to 66-65 with a layup at the 2:50 mark, but Blunt drilled a 3-pointer and the Scot lead didn't dip below four the rest of the way as the Scots secured the victory.
The Scots trailed 35-32 after Sean Fullerton scored the first basket of the second half for the Lakers.
Daunte Wilcott caught fire to start the second half scoring the first 15 points of the frame for the Scots. His third triple of the half at the 13:21 mark gave the Scots a 47-43 lead.
Planutis cut the lead to one, 47-46, with a trey of his own and Sean Lang gave the Lakers the lead back with a layup with 12:03 to play.
Jack Gallagher responded with a 3-pointer of his own and the lead bounced back and forth with neither team able to build a two-possession advantage until the late Edinboro push.
Mercyhurst used the homecourt advantage to get out to an early 10-6 lead after a pair of Planutis free throws. The Scots answered back with a 10-1 run capped by a Blunt triple at the 12:24 mark of the first to take a 16-11 lead. Sean Fullerton cut the lead to 16-13 with a jumper at the 11:32 mark.
Edinboro scored the next eight points to open their largest lead of the game 24-13 on a trey from
Easton Fulmer. The Scot lead was still 11, 28-17, after a Gallagher layup with 6:28 on the clock, but Mercyhurst closed the half on a 16-4 run to take a 33-32 led into the break.
Blunt led all scorers with 26 points to go with nine rebounds. Wilcott finished with 17 points, three assists and two boards. Gallagher tallied 13 points, four rebounds and five assists. McNeill just missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Planutis led Mercyhurst with 23 points. Fullerton scored 14 and Reichert added 10 points and nine boards.
The victory snapped a streak of 13 straight losses for the Scots at the hands of the Lakers and improved Edinboro's conference record to 4-6.
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they travel to IUP. Game time is slated for 3 p.m.
