Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro football team came out on the wrong side of another one possession game falling 25-21 to visiting Gannon Saturday afternoon.
The Scots trailed 18-14 in the fourth quarter taking over at their own 25-yardline with 11:06 to play. Gannon forced Edinboro into a punt situation, but
Reed Martin pulled down the fake on fourth and 10 and rushed for 29 yards to give the Scots a first down at the Golden Knight 46.
After a delay of game,
Isaac Bernard hit
Jaret Frantz for 15 yards to the Gannon 36. A pair of
Caron Robinson rushes set up a third and five from the Gannon 31 before Bernard found Frantz again for a first down at the 17. The Scots faced a third and four from the Golden Knight 5-yardline,
Jeremiah Neeley went up and hauled in the Bernard pass despite being interfered with to give the Scots a 21-18 lead.
On the ensuing Gannon possession, Edinboro forced a third and 16 from the Gannon 19. The Golden Knights completed a 15-yard pass to cut the fourth down distance to just a yard. Jayden Whitaker picked up the first down to the Gannon 36. After a snap went past Whitaker, he scooped it up and tossed it 46 yards to Donell Mason moving the ball to the Edinboro 20. Gannon finished the 10-play, 75-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Mason with 26 seconds to play setting the final.
The Golden Knights struck first in the first quarter. Whitaker finished off an eight-play, 50-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run. Bryson Costa missed the extra point to make the score 6-0 Gannon at the 5:28 mark of the first quarter.
The Scots answered marching the ball 78-yards in 12 plays capped by a 20-yard touchdown pass from Bernard to Neeley. Lambert connected on the extra point to give Edinboro a 7-6 lead. The Scots took that lead into the locker room at the half.
The Scots punted on their opening drive of the second half and the Edinboro defense forced a three-and-out.
CJ Waldier got a hand on the Costa punt to set the Edinboro offense up with a first down at the Gannon 35.
Back-to-back runs by Robinson moved the ball to the Gannon 19. Bernard connected with
Bo Swartz to advance the ball to the 11. A Scot false start moved the ball to Gannon 15 and Bernard hit
Teagan Brown a 15-yard touchdown extending the lead to 14-6 with 9:02 left in the third.
The Golden Knights answered on the ensuing drive taking the ball 75 yards in 11 plays with Whitaker taking it in on the ground again, this time from six yards out. The two-point play failed keeping the Edinboro lead at 14-12. After the Scots were forced to punt, Gannon took the lead with a six-play 67-yard touchdown drive with Whitaker scoring on a quarterback sneak for his third rushing touchdown of the day. The two-point play was again no good making the score 18-14 with 11:06 to play.
Bernard was 15-of-19 for 159 yards and three touchdowns. Frantz caught three balls for 52 yards. Neeley added five catches for 49 yards and two scores. Robinson carried the ball 22 times for 119 yards an average of 5.4 per carry.
Defensively,
Wilfredo Diaz notched 10 tackles, four solo and blocked a field goal. Cory Gross Jr.added eight stops, 1.5 for a loss and a half a sack.
Zach Malpica notched 2.5 sacks.
Whitaker led the Gannon offense throwing for 191 yards and one touchdown while rushing for 68 more and three scores. Mason was his leading target catching six balls for 94 yards. Hayden McDonald made 11 tackles including seven solo stops to lead the Golden Knight defense.
The Scots return to Sox Harrison Stadium next Saturday when they host Seton Hill at noon in PSAC West play.
