Men’s Basketball Drops Road Contest at UPJ

Johnstown, Pa. – The Edinboro men's basketball team fell 82-75 to host Pitt-Johnstown Saturday afternoon in PSAC West action.
 
The Scots held a 39-35 lead at the half. The Mountain Cats opened the second half on a 8-2 spurt to take a 43-41 lead after a Vinnie Cugini layup. Easton Fulmer tied the game with a layup at the 17:06 mark. UPJ reeled off five straight points and led 48-43 after a pair of Cugini free throws.
 
Edinboro responded with a 5-2 spurt with Fulmer hitting a triple and Daunte Wilcott scoring a layup to cut the lead to 50-48 at the 13:47 mark. The Mountain Cats opened up a 59-51 lead on the back of a 9-3 run. Edinboro battled back with a 7-2 spurt trimming the lead to 61-58 after a Jack Gallagher layup. UPJ opened the lead up to 75-65, and held off a late Scot charge to take the win.
 
The teams played even early after a layup by Cugini the score was knotted 6-6 at the 16:44 mark. Edinboro scored the next six points with Gallagher tallying four and Bernie Blunt hitting a jumper. Nick Watts stopped the run with a 3-pointer, but the Scots answered with an 8-3 run to take a 20-12 lead at the 11:57 mark of the first.
 
Andy Zuchelli hit a trey on the next Mountain Cat possession to cut the lead to 20-15. Edinboro went on a 7-2 run capped by a Blunt layup at 9:51 making it 27-17. UPJ would scored the next five points to trim the lead to 27-22, but a Wilcott 3-pointer sandwiched between five points from JJ Eubank pushed the Scot lead to 35-22 with 5:38 on the clock. The Mountain Cats closed the half on a 12-4 run cutting the halftime deficit to 39-34.
 
Gallagher notched a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Madior Seye led the offense with 15 points to go along with eight rebounds. Blunt tallied 12 points while Fulmer finished with 11.
 
Watts was the Mountain Cats leading scorer with 18 points. Will Kromka added 16 points and seven rebounds. Gavin Headings finished the game with 14 points and nine rebounds.
 
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they host Mercyhurst. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
