Women’s Basketball Scores Dominant Road Win at UPJ

Johnstown, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team jumped on host Pitt-Johnstown early and never looked back scoring an 80-51 road victory Saturday afternoon in PSAC West play.

The Scot defense held the Mountain Cats to less than 15 points in each of the four quarters and limited UPJ to just 28.6 percent shooting from the field. Conversely the Scots shot 53.8 percent from the field and an even 40 percent from beyond the arc.

UPJ held a 3-2 lead after a Kylah Franklin jumper at the 7:33 mark of the first. The Scots came back with a 19-7 run capped by a Gillian Fisher layup with 2:15 to go in the opening quarter to take a 21-10 lead. Cassidy Crawford made a layup for UPJ at the 2:03 mark, before a Morgan Gentile and-one and a Fisher layup closed the half giving Edinboro a 26-12 lead heading to the second.

Hayley Sims opened the second quarter with a pair of 3-pointers extending the advantage to 32-12. The Mountain Cats hit a pair of free throws trimming the lad to 32-14, but Allyson Kirby and Sims each hit a trey to make it 38-14. UPJ closed the quarter on a 9-5 run to cut the halftime deficit to 43-23.

The 20-point halftime deficit was as close as the Mountain Cats would get the rest of the way with the Edinboro lead swelling to as much as 32 in the fourth quarter.

The Scots held a decisive advantage on the glass, outrebounding UPJ 39-21. Edinboro was also highly efficient at the free throw line going 18-of-20 from the charity stripe.

Gentile led all scorers with 22 points to go with six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Gentile finished the game 8-of-9 from the field and 6-of-6 at the line. Sims added 21 points, five rebounds, three helpers and a block. Fisher also scored in double figures with 10 points, just missing a double-double with nine rebounds as well as four steals.

Franklin paced the UPJ offense with 15 points while Crawford tallied 12.

The Scots return home on Wednesday when they play host to Mercyhurst. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
