Football Falls on the Road at No. 9 Kutztown

Kutztown, Pa. – The Edinboro football team dropped a 26-0 decision to No. 9 Kutztown Saturday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium.

After the teams traded punts on the first two possessions, Kutztown went on a 10-play, 80-yard drive capped by a Steven Burkhardt one-yard touchdown run with 4:49 left in the first quarter. The extra point hit the upright and was no good making it 6-0.

The Scots punted on the next possession, but the defense came up with a turnover on the second play of drive when Kyrell Hutcherson came down hill on a screen and knocked the ball free from Lenniek Preston. Toby Cline scooped up the loose ball and returned it to the Golden Bear 17-yard line.

On third and eight from the Kutztown 15, Isaac Bernard connected with Gavin Ennis to the Golden Bear 2-yard line, but Jake Davis forced a fumble and Kutztown recovered ending the scoring threat. Kutztown tacked on a field goal before the end of the half to take a 9-0 lead into the break. The Golden Bears scored 17 points in the third quarter to set the final.

The Edinboro defense was led by eight tackles from Wilfredo Diaz with a pair of solo stops. Zach Malpica notched six stops. CJ Waldier added five tackles with a tackle for loss while Jermaine Atkins also made five solo tackles with 2.0 for a loss.

Teagan Brown made 11 catches for 59 yards to lead the receiving attack. Evan Low added four catches for 31 yards. Bernard was 22-of-32 for 119 yards. Jerry Dinkins netted 27 yards on nine carries to pace the ground game.

Judd Novak led the Kutztown offense going 11-of-22 through the air for 124 yards and carrying seven times for 25 yards. Steven Burkhardt carried 10 times for 66 yards and two scores. Jalen DeVose was the leading tackler with nine stops and a tackle for loss.

The Scots are back in action next Saturday when they travel host Bloomsburg at 12 p.m. inside Sox Harrison Stadium for the annual Hall of Fame game.
