Shepherdstown, W.Va. – The Edinboro women's volleyball team split two matches on the final day of the Ram Rumble in Shepherdstown on Saturday afternoon.
The Scots opened the day with a 3-0 sweep of Mars Hill and fell 3-2 in a hard-fought match with host Shepherd in the night cap.
In the opener, the Scots and Lions were knotted 11-11 in the first set. Kills from
Erika Lindqvist and
Makayla Neelands sandwiched around a Mars Hill error gave the Scots a 14-11 lead that they never relinquished on their way to a 25-16 win.
Edinboro found themselves down 22-18 in the second, but six straight points led a pair of Neelands aces and kills by
Kasey Smith and
Jessica Hardin put the Scots up 24-22. The Lions trimmed the lead to 24-23, but a Hardin kill closed out the set for Edinboro. The Scots dominated the third jumping our 17-8 and finishing the match with a 25-17 victory.
Neelands tallied 14 kills, four service aces and 10 digs. Hardin also reached double figures with 11 kills, 13 digs and a pair of blocks. Lindqvist tallied nine kills, two blocks and three kills.
Abigale Soboleski notched 20 assists and nine digs while
Laney Burns chipped in 15 helpers and six digs.
Carly Pry notched a team-high 15 digs.
Against Shepherd, Edinboro fell behind 8-1 out of the gate, but went on a 15-3 run to take a 16-11 lead. The Rams answered with a 10-3 run of their own to grab a 21-19 edge. The Scots leveled the score at 21-21 on a Pry service ace, but Shepherd scored four of the next five points to take the first 25-22.
With the second set tied at 11-11, Edinboro scored three straight points on one kill each from Neelands, Hardin and Lindqvist. The teams traded blows with the Scots holding on to an 18-17 lead. Smith went on a service streak that included three aces as Edinboro scored six straight to take a 24-17 lead before taking the set 25-18.
In the fourth, Edinboro jumped out 11-3 and cruised to a 25-13 set win to go up 2-1 in the match. The Rams battled back winning the third 25-21 and the fifth 15-11 to take the match.
Neelands led the offense posting 17 kills to go with a service ace and 12 digs. Hardin notched 15 kills and 11 digs while Lindqvist added 13 kills and three blocks. Soboleski led the team with 19 assists to go with seven digs and Burns tallied 17 assists and 11 digs. Pry finished the match with a team-high 27 digs and five service aces.
The Scots are back in action on Friday with a trip to Mount Olive for the Mount Olive Invitational.
