Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to pull away from visiting Clarion 67-48 Friday evening inside McComb Fieldhouse.
The Golden Eagles cut the Edinboro lead to 46-40 at the 9:25 mark of the fourth on a Madison Palek free throw. The Scots responded with a 9-3 run capped by a
Morgan Gentile steal and score to extend the lead to 55-43 with 5:00 to play.
Zoe Guise pulled Clarion within single digits, 57-46, with a 3-pointer on the next Golden Eagle possession, but Edinboro scored 10 straight including 3-pointers from
Hayley Sims and
Gabby McDuffie to push the lead to 67-46. Autumn Taylor set the final with a layup at the 23 second mark.
With the score tied 4-4 early in the first, Sims scored a layup followed by back-to-back buckets from
Ava Haddad to put Edinboro up 10-6 with 3:24 left in the opening frame. The teams traded bucket to close out the first with the Scots holding a 14-10 edge after the first.
Clarion came out in the second with a 6-2 spurt to knot the game 16-16 on a Malayziah Ethredge 3-pointer. McDuffy answered with a trey and Haddad tallied a layup to put Edinboro ahead 21-16 with 4:30 to play in the second.
The Scot lead was cut to one, 23-22, with 1:31 to play before McDuffie hit a pair of free throws and Sims hit a jumper to extend the lead back to 27-22. Etheredge scored at the horn to cut the halftime deficit to 27-24.
In the second half, Clarion opened on an 11-4 run taking a 35-31 lead on an Etheredge triple at the 4:59 mark of the third. Two
Rachael Manfredo free throws and a Gentile 3-pointer put the Scots back ahead 36-35 with 4:29 left in the third. Clarion retook the lead, 37-36, on a Guise layup at the 4:10 mark. Edinboro closed the third quarter on a 10-2 run to take a 46-39 lead into the final frame.
Gentile led the Edinboro offense with 17 points to go with seven rebounds, five steals and five assists. McDuffie turned in a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards. Sims tallied 11 points, seven boards, three assists and two blocks. Haddad also tallied 11 points for the Scots.
Arianna Seitz led the Golden Eagle offense with 12 points. Guice and Etheredge each tallied 10 points.
The Scots are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Gannon. Tipoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
