North Canton, Ohio – The Edinboro men's basketball team dropped an 80-59 decision to host Malone on Tuesday night in non-conference action.
The Pioneers took a 10-3 lead at the 14:59 mark after a Jacob Ernest bucket.
Mekhi Reynolds made a layup,
Bryce Baez connected on a trey and
Evan Berger made a jumper to tie the game 10-10 with 12:45 left in the first half.
Th teams traded buckets with
Rowan Carmichael tying the score 16-16 with his jumper at the 9:32 mark. Emmanuel Oladeru put Malone ahead 18-16 with a layup before Carmichael hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Scots a 22-18 advantage with 7:30 left in the opening frame. The Pioneers went on a 13-2 run to take a 31-24 lead with 1:53 on the clock. Carmichael hit another triple to cut the lead to 31-27, but Malone closed the half with a 4-1 spurt to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.
In the second half, the Pioneers came out fast scoring the first six points to pull ahead 41-28 after a Joey DeGeorge layup at 17:37. Five points from Carmichael and a Berger dunk trimmed the lead to single digits, 44-35, with 16:10 on the clock.
Malone stretched the lead to 61-39 with a 17-4 run capped by an Oladeru free throw with 10:32 to play. The Scots got as close as 16, 65-49, after a Berger bucket with 5:52 remaining, but couldn't close the gap further the rest of the way.
Carmichael paced the Edinboro offense with 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting including 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. He also dished out four assists and had one steal. Berger also scored in double figures with 14 points while grabbing three rebounds.
Josiah Pierre led the Pioneers with 16 points and nine rebounds. Nic Williams added 15 points and Oladeru finished with 14.
The Scots return to action on Sunday when they host Thiel. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m. Admission is free and fans are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item and donate it at the ticket window.
