Women’s Basketball Falls to No. 15 Minnesota State University

Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro dropped a 113-71 decision to No. 15 Minnesota State University Friday night in their opening game at the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic presented by AHN Pavillion.
 
The teams traded baskets early with Minnesota State grabbing an 11-6 lead after a Mallory Czinano jumper. Samantha Baker trimmed the lead to 11-8 with a two-pointer of her own. The Mavericks scored the next eight points to build a 19-8 advantage. Taylor Blunt made a layup to pull within 19-10 before Minnesota State finished the quarter with a 13-5 spurt to take a 32-16 lead after one.
 
The Mavericks turned up the pressure in the second quarter building a 48-22 advantage after a Natalie Bremer triple at the 6:18 mark. The lead grew to 59-26 after a pair of Rhyan Holmgren free throws. Rachael Manfredo slowed the run with a layup at 3:40 to make it 59-28. Minnesota State took a 69-32 advantage into the half.
 
The Scots came out in the second half with a 10-6 spurt capped by a Blunt 3-pointer at the 6:21 mark to make the score 75-42. The Mavericks responded with an 14-2 run to push the lead to 89-44 with 3:23 left in the third. Blunt scored the next four points to pull withing 89-46, but Minnesota State closed the quarter on a 22-2 run to take a 101-48 lead into the final quarter.
 
Edinboro outscored the Mavericks 23-12 in the fourth quarter to set the final.
 
Blunt led the offense with 19 points to go with four rebounds and two assists. Manfredo also reached double figures with 14 points. The Scots shot 56.9 percent from the field but were outscored 43-18 off turnovers.
 
Bremer paced the Mavericks with 24 points. Elisabeth Gadient added 12 and Czinana added 10.
 
The Scots are back in action on Saturday when they take on No. 4 North Georgia at 7 p.m. inside McComb Fieldhouse.
