Edinboro, Pa. – The Edinboro women's basketball team fell 65-50 to Northern Michigan in the final game of the D2CCA Tip-Off Classic on Sunday afternoon.
The Scots came out firing, scoring the first 10 points of the game including 3-pointers from
Hope Garrity and
Kendal Batchik in the first three minutes of action. The Wildcats responded with a 10-2 run of their own to trim the lead to 12-10 after a Jacy Weisbrod trey. Garrity connected on another triple at the 2:05 mark to make it 15-10 Edinboro. Layups by Sydney Whitehouse and Faith Walder trimmed the Scot lead to 15-14 after the first.
Northern Michigan scored the first four points of the second to grab a 17-15 lead.
Samantha Baker scored a bucket to tie the game 17-17 with 8:44 showing on the clock. The teams traded buckets with
Ava Haddad hitting a layup at the 4:25 mark to give the Scots a 24-22 advantage. The Wildcats answered with 12 straight points to grab a 34-24 lead on another Weisbrod 3-pointer. Baker would cut the lead to 34-26 with a long two, but a pair of Whitehouse layups made it 38-26 Wildcats at the break.
In the third, Scots chipped away keeping Northern Michigan off the board for over seven minutes and cutting the lead to 38-34 after a
Carmen Vasquez layup at the 3:20 mark. Whitehouse final scored for the Wildcats at the 2:50 mark sparking an 11-2 run to close the half to make it 49-36 Wildcats heading to the final quarter.
The Northern Michigan lead grew to 58-41 midway through the fourth on a Weisbrod 3-pointer and the Wildcats held the lead to the 65-50 final.
Haddad led the Edinboro offense with 14 points to go with three rebounds and three assists. Despite foul trouble,
Rachael Manfredo turned in eight points, three boards and two steals.
The Scots are back in action next Friday when they travel to West Liberty to take on the Hilltoppers at 4 p.m.
